An Officer and a Gentleman Reviews
Only movie I saw which got a standing ovation at the end. Forty Five years later haven’t forgotten it!
A Classic Romance Melodrama. It starts out a bit slow and takes some time to get going but once the "I got no where else to go" scene occurs it really finds it's footing in the melodrama/romance and takes a step up the rest of the way. It's really well made all around. The naval academy stuff is a bit jumpy and setting up the romance is a bit clunky too. It becomes much more character driven and focused on Sid, Zack, Paula, and Lynnette instead of on the naval class. (Although there good too) It's got good direction and the setting is memorable and the two leads got solid chemistry that builds over time. We watch Zack become effectively the title of the film. It can be a bit over the top with it's drama and doesn't tell it in the smoothest way possible but it works and thanks to the solid execution works really well. Wish it was maybe a bit more sunny instead of grey a lot of times but it's a small complaint in the end. Garrett as the drill Sgt. is excellent and easily the best thing. His dedication, brutality, and rock solid honor is amazing. If your a fan of the director, any actors in this, melodramas, or romances than give this a watch. Maybe too if your a fan of Navy movies also but it really isn't a war movie like how the first half of Full Metal Jacket is.
Amazing old school 80's feel good movie. Still a fantastic watch today. Highly recommended.
One of my most favorite movies, a true classic in my eyes ,hard to not give it 5 stars ,where do you take away a star to make it 4 stars ,,where oh where i ask ,,impossible
A sad movie with a sweet end
Best of the Best. Why? Absolutely perfectly captures life on and around a military post at that time for the newly enlisted. Precisely directed, accurately portrayed, and exceptionally delivered performances. You may not have any interest in any of this area of life, but you could not document these characters and that time any more realistically.
Pretty good movie. I see why it’s a classic. Not necessarily my favorite, but good.
this smells like cheese
Ugly from the very beginning. A victim of emotional abuse becomes a man at the hands and feet of a sadistic drill instructor. "Lord, lift us up," indeed.
When attending in the 1980's I was waiting for the moment the military would be ridiculed. This moment did not come. In hindsight I realize that (for me) this was the point that a wind of change had come - (far) from flower-power to militarism, and neo-con. Maybe the acting and filming was OK, but a great pity that it marks the point where society took a wrong turn.
A classic 80's movie with brilliant performances and a great soundtrack. Tim Treakle
Let me start off by saying I am a long-time movie lover, and have frequently used Rotten Tomatoes as a reference when selecting films. This, however, is the first review I've written. I actually created an account just to leave this review, and warn people not to waste their time with this "classic". It was so awful, I legitimately feel a personal responsibility to correct this movie's inflated rating. The entire film was an incoherent, misogynistic mess with no clear purpose or message. Richard Gere's performance is flat, unconvincing, and completely devoid of charm. I cannot stress this enough—SKIP THIS MOVIE!!!!
A solid drama about a navy jet officer training camp and its unruly recruit. Throw in some romance, reasonable an ting and a top 80s theme song made for the film and you have something worth watching, even if it's largely forgettable and derivative stuff. Bought this one on DVD for £1 from a charity shop.
An Officer and a Gentleman is a drama film I really, really like, that is to say if you love Full Metal Jacket. Why did I say that? Well, because with the passion it's similar than I thought it would be. Like the drill instructor like Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket and now you have Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. Zack Mayo (which Foley calls him Mayonnaise) who is a United States Navy Aviation Officer Candidate who is beginning his training at Aviation Officer Candidate School. Richard Gere and Debra Winger have good chemistry together on screen. Now let me get to the ones I didn't know about the film and that is one thing, The song in it is called "Up Where We Belong" and it's sung by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. And I gotta say, I really love it and it's beautiful as f£$k. There are alot of songs that I really love from Joe Cocker. One is "You Can Leave Your Hat On" which that Tom Jones does his version. I really like "Unchain My Heart" even though the lyrics at times are a little goofy. And it's such a shame that he died. I actually enjoyed An Officer and a Gentleman, I think it's a wonderful romantic drama film. Most of the time I enjoyed Louis Gossett Jr's performance, he really give an outstanding performance as a drill sergeant like I do with R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket. I just enjoyed his moments. Both of which are similar such as not to eyeballing the drill sergeant and he will know every move everyone makes. Now that's always something that makes people laugh. The story is beautiful and has the power of character, courage and guts. Ever than that, An Officer and a Gentleman is some kind of love that something that lifts us up where we belong.
A dull and contrived romantic/drama that at times is a painful watch.
Best thing Richard Gere ever did. Ditto for Deborah Winger.
An Officer and A Gentleman is a wonderfully made film but with that being said it's not really my cup of tea. The movie was made in 1982 but feels more like a late 80s films so there's another going for it; with that being said Officer And A Gentleman good film just not something i'd want to seek out actively to watch. 3 in a half stars.
A classic movie - Richard Gere is a dreamboat here too.
This is a somewhat sentimental and perhaps slightly cheesy film. It's somewhat reminiscent of Top Gun, or even Police Academy, only without the comedy element. It's a good enough watch, not brilliant but not bad either. I didn't feel the plot was quite solid enough for my liking but its ok.
