Oranges and Sunshine Reviews
Such a sad, touching movie. Just proves one person can make a change. My heart goes out to all the families left heartbroken by yet another situation that has been buried.
This movie is heartbreaking for several reasons. On the same level as "The Sound of Freedom", the British government saw these children as a deficit. Born to either unwed mothers or very poor women, their solution was to quietly send these children to Australia by lying to them. Most were taken into to state care via social service due to unfit homes. The mothers were lied to and told their children had been adopted into loving homes with better living conditions while the children were told their mothers had died. Many went into orphanages and doled out to less-than-ideal living situations where they were used as slave labor, or abused physically, mentally, emotionally and sometimes sexually by the people who were supposed to be caring for them. One day, it comes to the attention of a social worker who is determined to uncover the truth and possibly re-unite adult children who just want to know who they are. The scandal exposed by her search for the truth causes both governments to take responsibility for this violation of human rights and further shines a light on how far back and how deeply human trafficing goes.
Decent kDrama, but does paint Korean's as pretty bad people. So many annoying characters, really frustrating actors, but the wife enjoys it!
I know this is based on a true story, though I have no idea how much is based in fact and how much is fiction. Because movies always change things, from tiny things to turning real people to other races or genders to major plot points. Sometimes these "true" stores is only one tiny piece of reality. That said, since I don't know what happened and what's fiction I won't go further. But I can say this when it comes to true stories. You need who, what, when, where and why. The movie supplies us with who, what, when and where but forgets something important WHY? Why did they do that? Were the real kids black and the movie left that fact out? Was it racist? Was it they were poor? Was it a classicist action? Leaving out why makes this a exercise in just talking. And that is why the movie fails, not bothering to find out why? The motive of such a horrible act. The movie has no stance to stand on. Honestly without the WHY the plot real or not makes no sense. We needed WHY! Plus another movie that doesn't earn the R rating because of the stupid ONE F-bomb rule which I will keep calling the conservative MPAA on for being stupid.
História bem triste sobre crianças enviadas para outro país contra sua vontade e como uma mulher ajudou-as a reencontrar suas origens. O filme tem alguns momentos bem clichês e outros um tanto inesperados que causaram uma certa surpresa positiva.
I'd never heard about this human abuse until I watched this movie. So sad to think of all the destroyed families and the horrific abuse of the children. This is recent abuse in two "modern" countries, not abuse in some 3rd world country.
Not as gritty as expected, but another great performance by Emily Mortimer and of course a worthy tale to be told
Truly horrific that this was allowed to happen. 130,000 children taken. Margaret Humphreys couldn't have been played by anyone else than Emily Watson
Disappointing after the book. Emily Watson gives a soft-edged portrayal of Margaret Humphreys. We didn't feel her struggle, her fight against the authorities. Overall it lacks passion.
Quite boring. We knew already that the english empire was not above all kinds of abuses. So learning that children were used and abused to help its invasions was not too surprising. Maybe a bit shocking that they declared parents dead and children were sold, to further their invasions. But really, do the englishes have it so hard? If they do, they sure make everybody else pay real good. As it should. It's the english way.
Excellent performances by the cast with an exceptionally moving performance by Emily Watson, anchoring the film as it ricochettes between two nations at opposite ends of the globe. Very restrained approach by Ken Loam with the plethora of social justice source material.
It's a tragic and sad story of organized and systematic abuse of young innocent children. Three cheers for Margaret Humphreys (and Emily Watson's portrayal). The world needs more selfless, compassionate and caring people like her.
An exquisite performance by talented lead Emily Watson makes the movie based on the tragic true story very emotional. This story couldn't have been told better.
This film sounded interesting. I already thought about watching this couple of years ago, just never got around to it. Emily Watson and social scandal. Should be interesting. And it was. It was a fascinating piece of history that I had no idea about. I did know about sending criminals to Australia. I also knew about sad history of aboriginal children being sent to camps/homes to be "civilized" and saved from their pagan ways. But I did not know that over 100.000 children were deported from England throughout the years to be cheap and even slave labour mistreated in the hands of well-doers (charities, monks etc). The were taken away from their misfortunate and "bad" families (single mothers or poor families) who were told they had been adopted. Heart breaking and utterly interesting. Official apology took place in 2010. Some people still lived in the institutions etc in the 90s! Real life is better than fiction. Always.

Forced removal and deportation from your family to a life of hard labor and abuse in a "Christian" home. Yep just another glorious example of the benefits of religion to our lives.. those who wish to oppress others with their personal version of morality.
