Our Ladies Reviews

Worth a watch for a male point of view of the 90s "ladette" culture in the UK and catholic school girls. An entertainingly vulgar script parodies small-town teens. There's some beautiful acting and I liked the balance between comedy and drama. In my opinion it suffers from a lack of female input. But the source material was written by a man. I've not read the book so can only assume this has the same weakness. A shame there wasn't some female collaboration to tell this female-centered story.

This is set in the 90s and is a female version of Trainspotting. It's actually great fun!!

Derry Girls this isn't, it's less realistic (not a parent in sight) and less funny. However, although there's obviously a lot less time to develop all the characters in their 1 hour 45 minutes, they were sufficiently compelling for me to happily go on their raucous, madcap journey with them and even re-live just a small bit of my adolescence. It seems they entered some kind of time-warp in Edinburgh with the amount they fitted into their afternoon but suspend belief for a wee while and enjoy the convincing acting of an afternoon hilariously spent.

This is a pretty solid film about a smallish group of teenage students from a Catholic school who are lucky enough to go on a school trip to Edinburgh to perform as a choir at an event but the film isn't about the singing, its about the friendship and camaraderie between the girls. It's fair to say the film features a lot of frank sexual references and strong language, so be aware of that, if it's something that would either embarrass or offend you. It's a depiction of teenage freedom, not long before the characters would have to get out into the world and hold their own as it were, so I guess its a bit of a coming of age tale. I didn't think a great amount of it until the end, almost literally. The final scene I thought was quite poignant - we get quick text based updates about what happened to each of the characters after the events of the film, which makes it somewhat thoughtful. It's a film that reflects the time its set in pretty well (the 1990s), with the female characters being quite ladette-ish, probably as a response to the strict Catholic life their expected to live, being students of a Catholic based school. I found one scene in which one of the nuns, a teacher/member of staff, orders the students to step away from a window, funny due to the reaction they make when they see what was being looked at. This is a good film to watch if you'd like a little nostalgia of the 1990s I suppose, yes. It has some amusing moments and by the very end it has a poignancy to it too, so yes, I'd recommend it.

Not terrible but still a 2.5

It's a quirky story with very interesting characters. Not really a must see, but with the occasional fast forward it's OK enough to while away 40 minutes or so.
