Pacific Rim Reviews

The plot and visuals of Pacific Rim manage to coexist, giving the film an extra level of depth, one that we don’t often see in blockbuster films.

Proves that Guillermo del Toro is a master of many genres, as he accomplishes with this film things that countless other big-budget spectacles attempt to pull off. Pure delight from start to finish, channeling the best that kaiju movies have to offer.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Sep 20, 2023

Del Toro delivers a visual feast without falling into the ‘style over substance’ trap. Plenty of eye candy and thrilling action, but not devoid of emotion, what’s not to like?

If you have to make films about giant robots fighting sea monsters, then I reckon this is the way to make them.

Made to be seen on a stories-high screen with a jumbo tub of popcorn on your lap, Pacific Rim is serviceable summer entertainment, recommended based on the sheer scale of del Toro's onscreen spectacle.

It’s good science-fiction, and it’s good storytelling. More importantly to me it’s a wonderful hearken back to an old genre of movies that I’m still crazy about.

The carnage causes both tremendous destruction and a good amount of entertainment.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 4, 2020

That rare live-action film that actually justifies catching it in 3-D.

| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 19, 2020

This movie is like the grown up version giddy young boys on a playground, smashing their toys into each other, making explodey noises with their mouths. It's big, loud, there's not much more to it than that, and it is exactly as much fun as it sounds.

| Original Score: A | Jul 8, 2020

Del Toro has crafted a film that is much more than just the Godzilla versus Robotech summer blockbuster it would have been in lesser hands ... it may not be the greatest story del Toro has ever [told], it's ... better than most blockbusters have.

Del Toro creates a cinematic universe with its own rules that reaches the point of amazement with the explosive action sequences. [Full review in Spanish]

Story and cast isn't much, but doesn't have to be in this particular case.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 11, 2020

Pacific Rim goes those classic B-movies one better, with giant, pilot-driven, twenty-five-story robots specifically designed to do battle with the mega-monsters.

Del Toro returns with Pacific Rim, the biggest, and perhaps dumbest, film in his oeuvre.

| Original Score: 2.8/5 | Nov 19, 2019

I loved the whole look of Pacific Rim...but it was the been-there-done-that feel to the story which really let me down, and the frequently dire dialogue.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 12, 2019

Does the thought of nearly mountain-sized Transformers wailing away on Godzilla's uglier stepsisters with rocket punches and wrist swords excite you or do you have no idea what most of the words in the first half of this question mean?

| Original Score: B+ | Aug 27, 2019

[Ron] Perlman is a hoot, taffying out his scant screen time with another of his over-the-top portrayals.

| Jul 30, 2019

It's very creative and very fun.

| Jun 18, 2019

The love for these films is evident, and Del Toro makes us love them, too, through the sheer force of his enthusiasm.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jun 8, 2019

Between some impressive visual battles and some bizarre comic relief from Charlie Day and Ron Pearlman, "Pacific Rim" evolves into a fun bit of summer fluff.
