Critics Consensus

Passengers proves Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence work well together -- and that even their chemistry isn't enough to overcome a fatally flawed story.

Anne Cohen Refinery29 Passengers takes what could have been an interesting debate about consent and glosses it over with cheesy romance and problematic sex. Jun 26, 2017 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film's greatest sin is its intrinsic dullness. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 11, 2017 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald The production design here is spectacular and utopian - a delirious idea of a future that's perfectable, a world without blemish. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 6, 2017 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Its science-fiction premise about lovers in space starts with promising questions, but soon approaches a horizon that lacks depth and is lost, from the beginning, in a black hole of clichés. Abhishek K The storyline of this movie was amazing. I really like this movie so much. I really can't explain🥰🥰 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Alain E Interesting concept but moves too slowly. Probably those two are going to have sex, but I am not patient enough to wait until then. If they manage to return to earth, please text me at (484) 555 5555. Much obliged! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/16/25 Full Review Audience Member I’ve seen Passengers a few times and it’s always somewhat entertaining. This was at the height of JLaw and Pratt’s powers and they had the intended impact. Good acting that largely is done opposite no one or each other. I enjoyed the movie each time. It’s a cool premise but you have to suspend belief for a few things. One is that Jim (Pratt), somehow knows how to fix everything. Amazing how the one passenger who wakes up can do all the necessary items to fix the ship. Wish Fishburne had more of a role but he served as a necessary foil to advance the story. Could’ve used one final scene with the main characters instead of a voice over. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Audience Member It’s an excellent introspective drama in space, making you analyze what you would do in these situations. My lack of star is because you don’t fully sympathize with the main character of Pratt’s. The character comes across selfish, stalkerish, and creepy which is an uncomfortable feeling to watch.
