What to Know

Critics Consensus

The music of the night has hit something of a sour note: Critics are calling the screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical histrionic, boring, and lacking in both romance and danger. Still, some have praised the film for its sheer spectacle.

Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Deserves to be locked up in a dank, water-filled dungeon and left to molder. May 3, 2005 Full Review Independent (UK) Rated: 1/5 Mar 7, 2005 Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer My own reaction to the current version fashioned by Mr. Schumacher is one of pure stupefaction. Jan 27, 2005 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast It's all bloat and bombast, but Schumacher's too-faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic stage musical is still inherently watchable. Rated: 3/5 Dec 16, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast Highly watchable despite the bloated runtime and surprising lack of character development. Driver is a gem as a diva and Rossum makes a strong impression, but Butler's "sexy" Phantom sinks the whole enterprise. Plus: he can't sing! Rated: 2/5 Dec 11, 2024 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com As I was sitting in the auditorium alone watching this film, I kept looking around hoping there was a chandelier above me getting ready to plummet to the ground. Quan Feel so lucky to be able to finally see this on the big screen! Beautiful movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/29/23 Full Review Kailey K The acting and singing were amazing! Emmy and Gerard were very impressive and it really embodies the musical;while changing the dances minimally. Absolutely my favorite musical I've probably seen this movie over 100 times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/25 Full Review Titus A Just over 20 years old now. Wow. Love it! I loved the musical in the theatre and I loved the movie. Excellent casting and excellent music. I was initially not impressed at all by the casting of Butler and Driver, however, both proved me wrong. This is my second favorite Lloyd Webber after my number one all time favorite, Jesus Christ Superstar. The scores of the paid critics as always, show their lack of taste and intelligence in film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Tyler L A good movie with good performances and great music Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review Bradley N The movie is a solid 3/5 stars, however, the songs and voices carry the movie. Spectacular soundtrack. Slightly above average movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Khadidja G It was obviously good but unfortunately, people were right: the stage version is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY better. The movie is beautiful but the sets on stage blew me away. Some tiny changes just seemed so odd. Christine recognizing Raoul first irritated me a bit, they cut bits from the Phantom of the Opera song (IT'S THE TITULAR SONG), there's a weird sword fighting scene? Actually, so many swords in this movie and for what? However, I liked Emmy Rossum as Christine. She's a great actress and I loved her singing (Sierra is still that girl though). For some reason I couldn't vibe with Patrick Wilson's Raoul even though I liked Fraser's Raoul. Now Phantom... Gerard Butler's voice isn't bad at all but they completely softened some of my favourite Phantom's singing parts and that was so disappointing. I love Ramin's franticness as the Phantom, he's so unhinged and his voice is so powerful and commanding but Butler's voice just wasn't. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
