Awesome. Just like that. It is a raw view to the porn industry from the inside. Real actor and actresses, real situations, real script.

This is a good, albeit highly cringeworthy movie. The main character is its biggest downside. Her constant blah expression and monotone, horse voice make her incredibly annoying. With that said her empty, one-track mind does suit the role she plays. The realism of the acting and the unfiltered portrayal of the porn industry are the film's biggest strengths. Actually, the cinematography is equally fantastic. It explores the hollow depths of the world of pornography, and it does not hold back in its depictions of how that world operates. This was the kind of movie that needed to be as extreme as it was to get its point across. It's honestly very good, but that doesn't necessarily mean I loved it. It's hard to watch. The characters are all unlikeable (Bella's best friend is excluded from this statement). All in all, it's worth watching if the mystery of the adult film industry sparks your curiosity. I almost dare say it's important to watch if you're a heavy consumer of porn.

Trying to show behind the scenes, and how perverse it can be, why not? What I didn't like in this movie is that the main character is as empty as a 3 min porn vid. All the movie, she's as fake as that, except maybe after her "extreme"/#rape scene. Maybe it's to the viewer to get the why, and I can read through the lines to build my theory. But some obviousness would have helped others, imo. At least to avoid some misunderstandings.

It's essentially how the porn industry treats people except sugar coated. Not as sexual as it is disturbing. And neither a well-acted nor a good dramatic feature by any means. Final Score: 4.6/10

Sofia Kappel, some performance! As for 'Pleasure' as a whole, quite striking! They did a fantastic job at making every scene, particularly the porn set scenes, feel incredibly real - it feels documentary-esque at a fair few points. It's an erotic drama and, well, a genre has seldom been so apt. It portrays the porn industry in an unfortunately believable and uncomfortable way. I felt uneasy for the majority, but that's very much the intention. No doubt these type of films aren't to a lot of people's taste, but if they are - I'd recommend this 2021 release.

A solid reminder of the awful manipulation and soul-destroying effect this industry has on women.

This film takes seriously a young woman from Sweden who wants to escape her country and join the porn industry, though she shows more than a little trepidation when it comes time to perform. The glossy, neon surface of the film comes with a cynically realistic interior. It's a sort of twisted take on the American Dream.

What's most interesting about Pleasure is its power dynamics and how they integrate with porn. It seems to concentrate on larger firms based in LA where signed consent is literally all that matters in creating a hospitable work setting and plays off of that setting in scenes that are anywhere from uncomfortable to completely unsettling. Again, it's an interesting film, but I think it's worth mentioning that it is not an enjoyable one. There is little redeeming about its story. It's a cautionary tale from essentially every angle and its intentions are crystal clear, but now matter how much this was Pleasure's intent, it's tough to come away from this one with any other feeling than malaise which makes it feel slightly one dimensional.

It didn't need much - the emotions known for most women, even on a tiny personal scale - portrayed with the raw nature of the ever toxic, neon industry. i wouldn't say the movie is for everyone - but if the subject of how consent and boundries work in a world that treats its workers as cash piggies is what may interest you, definitely recommend. I also appreciate the blunt and realistic approach of the protagonist to her own sexuality, fresh!

Not a bad film, but it's not a new message: the porn industry dehumanizes all involved.

Protagonist you want to root for, but who shows up to her work unprepared, and has a big lie towards her mother.

OK, so I'm prepared to be branded a clueless male when it comes to my assessment of writer-director Ninja Thyberg's debut feature about women in the porn industry, but I'll go on the record and out on a limb to say I just didn't get much of what this offering is trying to say. As a treatise on the objectification and degradation of women in a male-dominated industry, yes, it makes that point loud and clear, with deliberate, unbridled justification. But it does so in a story involving a young protagonist who willingly leaves her home in Sweden and relocates to Los Angeles with the intent of wanting to become the next big female porn star. Doesn't that scenario speak to an ambition that she voluntarily wishes to pursue? What's more, she freely agrees to do challenging and shocking scenes involving violence and humiliation only to want to back out of them after starting to shoot. I can't help but wonder, what did she expect going in to these projects? It's as if she were utterly clueless, the personification of naïvete, making me wonder, how could she have possibly agreed to those terms if she didn't have any idea of what she was getting herself into? It's not that I don't sympathize with her feelings, but her intention and reaction under these circumstances just don't jibe for me, making me wonder what exactly did the filmmaker have in mind here, a question made all the more puzzling considering how the protagonist's story ultimately plays out. Fault the writing here, given a haphazardly constructed story and screenplay, along with a lack of back story to explain how it all came together to begin with. Moreover, lead actress Sofia Kappel simply isn't up to the task of carrying out the role, lacking the acting chops, charisma and (at the risk of being crass) looks to pull this off. And, in a story involving titillating subject matter, the simulated porn is itself, frankly, dull – not the least bit provocative, troubling or the slightest bit sexy but more disjointed, clinical and tedious. This one represents a missed opportunity to make some kind of meaningful statement, given that the central premise of its narrative is anything but groundbreaking, new or revelatory, just obvious. How this one captured a host of honors and nominations at film festivals and awards competitions is beyond me. Skip it.

Spoilers: What a layered bombshell. The cure for evil in the dark is truth in the light. Without a hint of being preachy, this shines the light on the porn industry. And it is the personal odyssey, the coming of age of a Swedish 18-year-old blonde, bored by life in a Sweden that she says is full of idiots and ready to become a "porn queen" in L.A. because, she says, "I like to fuck," with a stage name of Bella Cherry. It's not too long later that she complains on the phone to her Mom, who thinks she has a reputable internship, that L.A. is full of idiots. Her wise Mom in Sweden reminds her she left home because of the idiots and now L.A. has idiots, and the world is that way everywhere, but she says come home if you want to, but why don't you sleep on it first, and Bella stays in L.A.. And that note is sounded throughout. You decide, you give consent -- like Jason Bourne, we didn't make you do anything, you volunteered, Jason. The porn film shops make the "girls" sign consent for everything they do, and tell them if they feel uncomfortable doing anything, just say stop during filming. She is assigned by her agent to a house with three other "girls" and they actually become friendly, more with Joy than the others. Bella, with a soft gravelly voice and a laid-back demeanor, keeps her wide eyes open everywhere to meet the right people because she does want to go to the top of porn, to be that porn queen, and aggressively gives 110% to her new path. And she pretty much makes it, as we see a lot of nudity, but no penetration due to film angles. We see Bella is told, by a photog for stills. put your feet together, bend your knees, tilt your head to the left, hip to the right, and similar directions for actions during filming. Men do a lot of self manipulating to stay hard. And Bella shoots to the top after S&M shoots in which she is hurt, harmed and raped, and a shoot with "double anal," sort of the top of the line action for porn queens. At the end, after a split with roommate Joy over Bella's business over friendship, we see a topline Bella look colder, after she did a shoot with Ava, whom she didn't like, and was very angry and rough with her while wearing a strap-on. Never saw this kind of inside look at porn. But it raises questions about workplace male chauvinism in and out of porn, throughout society. It suggests men mostly also are at fault as spectators of porn as they are the market for a huge industry. And it raises questions about the soundness of society here and abroad, as parents apparently do not guide kids toward self-control, self-discipline, self-sacrifice and in directions of varying jobs in service to others and other constructive ends. But it also naggingly and shockingly makes me ask: If there were no porn industry that might defuse some otherwise repressed or oppressed energy out there, would we have more crime and other destructive behavior than we do now? Does it actually provide a safety valve? Even though we wonder: What about watching men use and abuse women on film is attractive to men? And why do women comply? Sofia Kappel, now 24, pulled off this role convincingly, being in virtually every scene, with a combination of ambition, and a face that sometimes looked like Adele, sometimes, Scarlett Johansson. And at the end, when she says she is sorry to Ava, and Ava asks what for, it hits Bella that Ava is so clueless that she doesn't even realize that Bella really was trying to hurt her in their shoot and that that is something to be sorry for. It hit Bella that she had no friends after moving out from Joy's place, friendship being a real worthwhile value, and that working to improve relationships via apologizing was better than being richer and in the status she had sought and got as porn queen. It mocked the title pleasure, as in, if this is pleasure, keep it. She had their driver stop the car and got out. One hopes, she left porn too. Newbie writer/director Ninja Thyberg fashioned a personal and impersonal look into the armpit and below of a pretty disgusting industry. All work in all industries may pay but they are not all equal. Thyberg's future is bright, if the porn industry she chronicles is dark.

Nudnawy. Przeciętna fabuła i nijakie zakończenie. Interesujący, trochę dokumentalny vibe - to główna zaleta tego filmu. Wizualnie ok, ładne kolory

Yet another interesting release from Mubi, Pleasure is an unflinching look at the adult film industry, experiencing it from the point of nineteen-year-old porn star wannabe, Linnea (a truly excellent performance from Sofia Kappel). The films' opening sequence sees the Swedish Linnea arriving in Los Angeles, being asked at passport control whether her trip is for business or pleasure. She pauses before answering ‘pleasure', and although the moment is low key it suggests the naivety of the young Linnea; she's there to be the best, and the scene invokes that she might think she'll love her job as well. She soon realises she might have to expand her repertoire if she's to exceed; in a meeting early on she states what she's willing and unwilling to do for a shoot, whereas the girls alongside her professes that she's eager to do anything. The film doesn't to do much to dispel the idea that the industry is exploitative, but neither does it suggest that all its actresses are ‘damaged' or have had abusive upbringings. Indeed, when Linnea is asked for her backstory she jokes that her Father abused her, and then laughs at the apparent myth that she's just spouted. It's easy to be reminded of Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights (1998), although Pleasure is a lot more explicit (despite only being a 15 and Boogie Nights being an 18) and difficult to watch in places as Linnea decides she needs to go down the more extreme route of porn to get noticed, and is exposed to the possible degradation and exploitation that you can fall foul of if you're not fully aware of the ins and outs. Directors have attempted to depict porn as an art form before, most notably Gasper Noe in Love 3D (2015), an unbelievably dull film that spawned from a genuinely interesting premise. Pleasure makes no attempt to sell porn as art; it gives you the grottiness of how it can be for newcomers (not to say it can't be unpleasant at any level) but what it does suggest is that this sort of exploitation takes place in every industry, but it's easier to expose through a form that is often controversial. Ninja Thyberg has produced a fine film that grips and shocks you, keeps you involved throughout, and most importantly doesn't force an opinion down your throat; it tells you a story that doesn't depict every one made in the industry, but certainly gives you an insight into the damage it can do when it goes wrong.

I think a movie like this is inevitably not going to be something that many people can appreciate because it's art, and probably will also be underappreciated because of it's subject matter.

Just a decent movie, it had some traction at the start but loses it quickly. You feel like you're stuck in the first act almost the entire movie. The story just doesn't progress well enough. Where this movie was strong, it had a good take on the porn industry and did it close to what I would imagine it would be for an amateur starting out. If you've come to watch a movie, it fails at being a complete movie, if you come to watch some porn... there are websites for that. What you get is something in between.
