IrateTyrant C So bad - it's good With my first actual foray into the realm of the subgenre, "Public Domain Horror", Popeye the Slayer Man definitely quenches a guilty thirst. I skipped Winnie the Pooh, and haven't had a chance to see any Mickey Mouse, but with a title like this, I had to make room for it. Because Slayer sounds like Sailor. In all honesty, the original Popeye cartoons did absolutely nothing for me. It's a good example of probably the first time in my life (as a toddler) that I felt compelled to like something because of its reputation, and found it to fall flat, as the cartoons were not funny and hardly entertaining at all. Here, in the horror genre, Popeye definitely finds new life. An unsuspecting victim of the new subgenre, himself, Popeye becomes ripe for gore and blood. The kills in this are genuinely pretty good. That may be partially because I absolutely hated basically all of the characters because of the bad acting and poor script. But it works! Especially Lisa, played by Marie-Louise Boisnier, these characters are so cringe, you will root for the villains. Even if the clingy boyfriend had been a killer in any scenes, I would have been sated in that more characters would die. Instead, Lisa gets a good enough death that it left me wanting more bloodshed. The monster costume is pretty great, too. Overall, this definitely falls in the "so-bad-it's-good" category. Fun stuff.
