Practical Magic Reviews
(I can only speak to my experience but) One million stars if you are an adolescent girl at the time of first viewing and it continues to be a million stars every subsequent watch into adulthood. This movie is everything.
My favorite movie of all time! Being based on a book there’s only so much you can cram into a movie but the pace is quick, soundtrack is epic, the dialogue is sharp (and endlessly memorable) “It’s not like he’s gona stay fresh, Gilly!” And for anyone who has ever lived in or visited New England, the seasonal changes (and that house!) are just everything. All time favorite hands down.
If this movie was released today (e.g. on a streamer) it would be a huge success. And it has a huge rewatch factor which means it's a classic.
iconic cinema and anything less is most likely from the perspective of a white male
This movie encapsulates a fantasy in time. A beautiful little microcosm where a long line of witches in a family experience a curse that cannot be escaped. 3 generations of sisters navigate living in communities that reject them for being different, losing out on access to powerful forces. Sandra Bullock is a major hearthrob and her and Nicole Kidman's dynamic is so fun to watch. Stockard Channing and Diane West equally as fun. I have seen this movie dozens of times and always look forward to cuddling up in the fall with a bowl of popcorn to watch this classic.
Endlessly enjoyable! A core part of our annual Halloween movie marathon, and an absolute mast watch. It’s about sisterly love that transcends time and distance, the divine feminine residing in all of us, and of course, the craft. There are some cute boys too. Epically beautiful, well crafted storytelling, and Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are utterly enchanting as witchy sisters who will do anything to protect the other. Watching it makes me feel like I’m a little girl again and reminds me that love and magic are alive with possibility.
A very relaxing witch movie. Nicole and Sandra are both at their most beautiful moments. There is also Aidan Quinn. It's really great. Moreover, I also like this feeling of slowly unfolding and patiently narrating. However, ah, foreigners' love is really "Love comes too fast, like a tornado." Just one more look at you in the crowd, and the next moment they are immediately kissing. Although this is the best portrayal of love at first sight, it's really a bit too hasty and not so good. I usually use these two sites for more free movies and short dramas. If you have a better website, please recommend it to me. I was in elementary school when I saw (and loved the original). I have seen it several times since, but then hadn't seen it for a few years and recently watched it on a plane. I love this movie. Can't wait for the sequel. ** I hope everyone from the original is still in it. And I do mean everyone! **
For two sisters from a family of witches, falling in love is the trickiest spell of all. Practical Magic is a 1998 American romantic fantasy film based on the 1995 novel Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman. The film was directed by Griffin Dunne 🧙 Can’t recommend it. Meh, it passed the time. Sort of. 😕 Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian's vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov -- and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.
A classic. Fun. Sweet. Perfect Cast. Rewatchable. Beloved.
Unwatchable dreck. Dreck that is unwatchable. Watching cannot be done of this dreck.
A movie that really sold me by the end but took too long to set up. Shave about 7 minutes off of the beginning of the film and you've got a banger. Still fun if you enjoy a good Halloween movie.
It's pretty clear there was some politics between the critics and the studio, because Practical Magic was a classic. Well acted, cleverly written with an original plot, and cast with a great blend of chemistry.
This is one of my favorite movies and I'm so excited there will be a sequel!
All the “bad” the critics are talking about is the humor they don’t get.
Terrible, bad, jumps from scene to scene, all over the place and the acting is terrible. Nicole Kidman was not good.
This is one of my all time favourite films. Love it.
Cult Classic. One of the best Witch type movies and i cannot wait for the Sequel.
Look, I do genuinely believe that rotten tomatoes profession critics ratings can be quite insightful, and sure it's a soapy movie and bla bla, but it is PEAK 90s nostalgia. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock SLAY. I'm not gonna sit here and analyze everything wrong with it; it's cute af. I guess my one criticism is that it sort of positions Kdman's character and her lack of settling down as a bit of a negative versus Bullock's leaning into a normal family lifestyle.
