Prime Reviews
It was a wonderful film that the director was able to feel about it.
this kind of movie is my favorite
I felt like the characters in this movie could feel the happiness and difficulties that they faced in real life.
this movie is also about love. It shows that there is a secret behind starting a relationship. It was a wonderful film that the director was able to feel about it.
Well I thought it was great. Ironic, heartfelt, heartbroken offbeat. Suit yourself.
Of course the fun anonymity of the premise wouldn't last long under comedic coasting built through the first half till it loosely declines with polished acceptance at the end, charmingly built enough boost from the performances particularly Meryl Streep's always the standout even during a comic level storyline. My 2022 quest to see all of Meryl Street's movie performances continues! This time around the film is Prime, released in 2005. It tells the story of Rafi Gardet (Uma Thurman), a freshly divorced woman of 37, and David Bloomberg (Bryan Greenberg) a 23-year-old struggling artist. The two meet randomly at the onset of the film, and shortly thereafter, David asks Rafi out on a date. Rafi is a little distraught over the age difference, but David doesn't see it as an issue. As Rafi struggles balancing the age difference against the emotional joy and sexual satisfaction that David is providing her, she confides intimate details of her budding relationship with her therapist Lisa Metzger (Streep). Viewers become aware very soon after the story begins unfolding that David is actually Metzger's son. Seems she uses her maiden name for her practice! It takes quite a bit longer before Dr. Metzger comes to realize that the man Rafi has been sharing intimate sexual details about, is her son… and this realization provides Streep with some of the funniest acting moments of her career. Streep imbues Metzger with a range of quirky uncomfortable fidgeting that is simply hilarious. The chemistry between Thurman and Greenberg is delightful, and the acting is top notch all the way around. Director Ben Younger peppers the movie with interesting cutaways that help elevate feelings, moods and humor in an unexpected way. Once the "big reveal" becomes known to all the characters there is a small amount of floundering within the story. When originally viewing I was disappointed with the film's final arc, but in hindsight it was because I was harboring a pre-conceived conclusion I wanted to happen. Upon reflection, the movie isn't about romance, it's about connections and growth. David's growth, Rafi's growth, and even Lisa Metzger's growth. Adjusting my perspective allowed me to enjoy the movie much more. The website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an aggregated audience score of 52%. I think that is a shame. I would give it a score of at least 75%. The movie has much more going for it than not. It's not a great film, but it is an enjoyable one that has an original premise, respectable acting and many, many good laughs.
This was a refreshing addition to the rom com genre . Loved the therapy sessions 2.9. One thing that bothered me was the stupid little “breakup scene”. It just felt forced so it was all just smooth sailing
I'm so surprised this movie is scored mediocre, it's one of my favorite romantic comedies ever! The actors are great, of course, it's romantic, original, funny, sexy... what more could you ask for? Curl up on the couch with a merlot and some popcorn and enjoy!
The romance is dull and the story unsatisfying.
This movie was extremely racist. The main male character used the word ‘negro' once. Both characters laughed about the male character dating a black girl and his granny dying 3 weeks after. Bad writing, shitty acting, lacks excitement. Just dull overall.
I gave it 5 stars to "push up" the score a little... Maybe it wasn't perfect for me,but it wasn't so bad. It was...good... worth seeing... I was in a mood for a romantic happy ending comedy, so it disappointed me a little...But, in a really good way, I totally agree with the ending... It raises some questions, it makes you think a little bit and it's light and fun and something... like, unique. I really liked the "taste" of it, the music, the scenes, the humor...Yes, Meryl Streep is great but... c'mon, those two were phenomenal! I liked it, think it's not so naive and ordinary, and it's not very bitter and pretentious... A love story worth seeing.(Love scenes are great :D )
When we think we have seen everything to be ready for something new and different we see our shot with someone seeking the same thing. When what we see we know others dont have much experience and others can't relive that experience once again when we are in different lives to see we are right for eachother when we each want the same thing. When we come all this way in experiencing this really embracing relationship but know it can't last when we can't see someone committing to something they will regret or be constrained to live with when they are not ready and still have plenty to see. When we come all this way to see that others are not ready for us getting our life back on track when there's plenty to experience before we are happy with our life before we take the next step in life. When we see life is full of experiences highs and lows that are learning experiences we need to see before we are comfortably happy to take the next step with eachother. When we see we can't speed up life and accept all what we see we must do in taking steps as we age, when experiences involves more than us but our family and friends to experience and go through life with us to know when the time is right. When we see someone gave us a life changing experience that we see we are in good places now when we see ourselves taking the next step of our lives more happily.
Has some good moments thanks to Meryl Streep. Really cheesy lines. Script was awful. Also, really adheres/reinforces conventional stereotypes that an older woman dating a younger man will always lead to failure. The "religious" tension was also really back dated.
We get big blockbusters by Universal Pictures and then we get Prime, a funny, sexy indie-esque little comedy with a great performance from Meryl Streep.
