Critics Consensus

Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins offers charming performances, especially from Alan Arkin, but its thin narrative and heavy-handed direction fail to deliver on the promise of its comedic potential.

Phil Strassberg Arizona Republic Charmless, chaotic and cheap, Rafferty and Co. are no credit to the "road" picture genre. Apr 24, 2025 Full Review Will Jones Minneapolis Star Tribune It all lopes along at an endearingly funny level, without ever becoming side-grabbingly hilarious, until the very end, when the picture finishes with one fine, shaggy punchline. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Farnum Gray Atlanta Journal-Constitution The actors are good, but director Dick Richards and screenwriter John Kaye have created an aimless and faintly annoying movie. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Ronald E. Butler Tulsa World There are enough bursts of energy and comedy to sustain the picture during the slow spots. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Stanley Eichelbaum San Francisco Examiner Dick Richards has kept the film moderately entertaining, but his touch is too heavy and insistent to ward off the tedium of a disagreeable and discordant road story. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News It's amiable enough on an absolutely minimal level but its idea of what is cute is somewhat questionable. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

dave s Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins is an odd little movie. Rafferty (Alan Arkin) conducts driving examinations and is forced at gunpoint to drive two young women (Sally Kellerman, Mackenzie Phillips) from California to Louisiana. Sure, there are some things that don't ring true, like when Rafferty escapes and then voluntarily reconnects with the kidnappers to continue the journey. Once the initial silliness is dispensed with, it becomes evident that all three characters are suffering and dealing with some nebulous sense of emptiness in their lives. By the time things wrap up, it's actually surprisingly touching. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps, but a brilliant and touching film for those who can catch it's groove. To appreciate it you need to accept: A. This is a totally 1970s movie. Life sucks (in the 70s) nobody even tries to change that because everyone understands that that is just the way its always going to be. B. This is a movie about losers. I don't think anyone apears on screen during the entire course of the film who is not a loser. They are losers when the film starts and they're still losers when the credits roll at the end. But if you're ok with that, the relationships that develop among the 3 primary losers are truly touching. It's never dull. It's well written and extremely well acted. And, as usual MacKenzie phillips steals the show. I loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Drab road comedy sad sack driving instructor Alan Arkin is kidnapped by two free spirited women, Sally Kellerman, Mackenzie Phillips, who make him take them from California to New Orleans at gunpoint. Arvin loosens up as the film progresses and willingly helps the wacky ladies. I'm a huge fan of Arkin and I also like Kellerman quite a bit, but this road comedy isn't all that funny or interesting and is only saved by the strong cast, which also includes Alex Rocco, Charles Martin Smith and Harry Dean Stanton. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review s r Fun movie about finding purpose in a hard world. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member another oft overlooked '70's gem Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
