Rec 4: Apocalypse Reviews

Feb 24, 2025

While an improvement over Rec 3. By ditching the found footage it becomes more of an generic zombie movie

There isn't really any of the rec films I don't like, yes the 3rd film is considered the worst but I still like it and I still like this for the same reasons as the 3rd film. Bad ass and gory (and acting). 7.5/10.

O found fottage não existe aqui.

I regret watching "Rec 4." It was a complete waste of my time and money. The plot was uninspired, and the acting was wooden. I felt no connection to any of the characters, and their actions often seemed forced and illogical. The movie lacked any real scares or suspense, relying instead on cheap jump scares and gore. Even the special effects were lackluster and unconvincing. To make matters worse, the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. It felt like the writers had simply run out of ideas and decided to end the movie without resolving anything. I cannot recommend "Rec 4." If you're looking for a good horror movie, look elsewhere.

Obviously better than the previous one for bringing the basic plot back, but all the tension that existed was gone, causing the feeling of a generic zombie film.

Rec 4 gets back to the original storyline and centers around searching for the origin of the parasite. Things get a little silly with the outboard boat motor as a weapon - but all in all a good infected romp.

So when I watched the 3rd one, I was surprised, not in a good way unfortunately, to see that they deviated away from atheism pure found-footage style. Well, in this one, the footages were reduced to only some surveillance cameras. How sad. They tried to replicated the sense of chaos and confusion that worked so well in the first two by having quick editing. This did not work so well as it just made the movie a mess without much tension. The claustrophobic location of a ship in the middle of the sea didn't really help. The first two were incredibly effective because of the terror and realism from the cameras. The ending had to leave some room for a sequel for some reason. I personally don't think we need a 5th one. This 4th movie deviated from the first one enough that going further would just ruin the franchise. Overall, a bloody and okay installment, and hopefully the last. That's probably true. 6/10

Nope. Timeline-wise, ‘Rec 4' is a direct continuation of the second film, but as far as the rest goes, it completely abandons everything that made the first two entries such successes -- the found-footage effect goes out the window, as does the storyline regarding the origins of the virus which is now completely confused; what they're replaced with is lots of gore and cheesiness. All this serves to remove both the tension and the atmosphere turning ‘Rec 4' into your bog-standard zombie flick that shouldn't be associated with the first two. I suppose writer/director Jaume Balagueró wanted to try to make something bigger and more polished, in the vein of Hollywood, but it seems that he's fundamentally misunderstood what made ‘Rec' and ‘Rec 2' such great horror films.

Ive watched both the Original Rec 1 and the American adaptation, This so far, became my favorite zombie movie. I love the american one better, the actress who portrayed Angela nailed the character. I didn't like how the story of the final season went on, im annoyed the whole time with the main characters, specially Angela and the guy who saved her.

Underwhelming compared to the first two. Still has its fun.

Para ser la 4a película no esta mal. Entretiene bastante.

One more outbreak. So getting back to that ill-fated apartment from the first two movies, a new SWAT team is planting bombs to cut their losses and just level the building at this point. Right before the detonation, however, Ángela (Manuela Velasco) comes out and gets rescued. What is to happen to her and the surviving SWAT team? Well, you have to quarantine them on a giant ocean liner, of course, and wouldn't you know that that pesky virus has not actually been eradicated... Now this was the only movie in the [Rec] series that I have actually never seen before. After being SO let down by Genesis, I lost all excitement for where this series was going (and after the second movie, they could have gone in so many different and better directions). Because I was watching the first one, I figured I might as well just watch the whole series just to see what I missed out on. I do think this is a bit better than Genesis, but it is not by much. Once again, they decided to not go with the found footage angle. I have mixed feelings about this, because while it wouldn't really make any sense for somebody to be recording in this setting, it does lose the total immersive experience that the handheld cameras bring, and that is ultimately the biggest reason I love [Rec] to the extent that I do. Right out of the gates, this is more interesting that Genesis, and that is largely due to Ángela returning. You do get engaged because you want to see what else they are going to do with this story, and the setup is there to do something new with the genre... but then you realize that you're just not going to get that. It just becomes a very standard zombie horror movie, and it comes with all the tropes that you have seen before. You have characters that don't make intelligent decisions, bad logic, and just an overall back to basics approach to horror filmmaking. A lot of the action is filmed too tightly to be fully appreciated, and you reach a point where you just start counting down characters that are still alive, because you know they're going to meet their end shortly. Honestly, it is probably best for this series to end. It's not like they can go back to the apartment again, and once they got out of that building, this series could never rise above being mediocre. I really don't see any way they can save this series at this point, which is sad, but as they say: all good things must come to an end. It is better to end this now when it is semi-passable before it starts becoming offensively bad.

Not as good as I expected but entertaining as always. I'm desperate for a fifth one but I doubt that will be made.

Rec Apocalypse brings the franchise back alive, after the third film. Great performances, gore, great story, great thrills, a unpredictable twist. This indeed was a great conclusion to a great franchise.

A different direction from #1 and 2. I skipped number 3 due to bad reviews. It starts off really well. Almost resident-evil-esque, or 28 days later, but then shoves a load of cliches into your face, with some major plot-holes. How the demon was transferred remains a mystery, but whatever. I hope #5 get's better writers. Also, there wasn't anything very 'apocalyptic' about this one.
