Revanche Reviews

Mar 23, 2025

An excellent and sober piece of storytelling, filled with humanity in what is otherwise a revenge story. It's a beautiful picture in every aspect.

Close to Perfect. Especially considering it's coming up to twenty years old. Turns the tired Hollywood revenge trope on it's head. A modern morality tale and beautiful, thoughtful, erotic love story to the human condition. Couldn't recommend more highly!

Genuinely well made. Intelligent twists, and good cinematography, which is always a plus point.

Very interesting, well shot and acted, asks a lot of big questions... what is revenge? What does it accomplish? Who in the film gets revenge, and/or does anyone in the film really get revenge, and how? Maybe the point is that revenge is a useless, aggressive and violent concept. The film seems to say that revenge is really never entirely possible? It is left open to interpretation, which makes it even better. Some of the more suspenseful scenes are among the best I've ever seen for their subtlety and clever techniques to fully engage the viewer. Top notch film making.

I very much enjoyed this movie.. The film only gets stronger as it progresses. The pace is slow, but its a pace i am accustomed to. Its quiet with limited dialogue, similar to a Haneke or Dumont film

When a smalltime criminal decides to rob a bank in order to improve his squalid life, things go horribly and predictably wrong, leading him to an inevitable confrontation with the person he believes is responsible for his misfortune. Revanche is a surprisingly effective thriller, especially in light of the fact that there aren't a lot of thrills to be found. Its success seems to be entirely attributable to Gotz Spielmann's creative directorial choices. More specifically, Spielmann uses a stationary camera with only sporadic pans or tracking shots to make the viewer feel like a third-party in virtually every scene, creating a sense of dread as you watch things spiral out of control. It's a slow burn from start to finish and will not be for all tastes, but it is compelling viewing for those willing to go along for the ride.

Beautiful thriller/drama that truly seems to be driven by the motivations of its characters, and not the machinations of the writer. The title hangs over the film from the first moment like a sword, and when it finally falls, it's not in the way you'd expect.

A gritty Austrian thriller with a nice twist.

Well made drama, but much of the irony was over the top. Regardless, it was entertaining to see a different side of Austria.

The film is good. Very good as a matter of fact. The not-so-high rating comes from the fact that is pretty slow and not always easy: you can put all the meaning of the world in the act of chopping wood, but after a while it is bound to become heavy on the eye. I recommended it nevertheless: a revenge, love and-so-forth story.

Superbly acted, tautly written and perfectly directed. Don't expect a thriller, but rather real, believable, emotional drama. A perfect antidote to the often infantile brain fluff of mainstream cinema. I would love to see more from this writer/director.

The sophisticated characters and deeper themes in Revanche propel it to be a thoroughly engaging, thought-provoking drama that's well worth the time of anyone who enjoys thinking about existentialism.

I have seen a lot of "slow-burning" thrillers and Revanche is perhaps the slowest and certainly not burning of them all. To call it even a thriller is an overstatement.

the gun culture is slightly different in this small Austrian town

Epic A.F. Slow burn revenge flick.

"Revanche" belongs to a particular style in the European filming, where the building of the characters is one of the main tasks of the director. It is a psycho drama but far away from the blockbuster type. It reminded me of Bergman´s films.

Gotz Spielmann's "thriller" is actually more of a surprisingly quiet study of two men in conflict. This is a study of a world that seems to deny hope. When two people fall in love and make the poor choice of committing a crime for the opportunity to start a new life, we are led into a modern take on Greek mythology. A gifted cast of actors and an extremely well-crafted work that often flirts with "film noir." A satisfying and masterful cinematic work that comes close to being a post-modern masterpiece of love, regret and guilt.

Often misrepresented as a thriller, Revanche is instead a slow-burning drama about confronting inevitability and finding redemption through self-confession. Austrian director Götz Spielmann weaves an affecting portrait of lives gone awry, marked by unforeseen tragedy and the redemptive search for catharsis. The film begins in a squalid section of Vienna, settling on two characters (a pusher and a prostitute) as they make a last-ditch effort to escape their station in life, where the promise of freedom is just one crime away. The gun's not even loaded. Nothing can go wrong. But life doesn't always go according to plan. Spielmann's film is preoccupied with human suffering and human mistakes but he's never judgmental. His film is dour, but it's never hopeless. What feels like fatalism in the earlier segments slowly blossoms into something like hope, as the characters come to terms with their own frailty and learn to forgive themselves. The title means "Revenge," but who do you blame when your life doesn't go according to plan? Spielmann's prescription comes with a hefty dose of introspection.

Great movie I loved it. It kind of reminds me of the American movie "The Place Beyond the Pines" I mean just the same style and even some of the same storylines show up. I love crime movies myself and I was extremely pleased with this one. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone remotely interested in crime movies.
