Miranda S Personally, I did not find this movie as scary as everyone told me it would be. Maybe it's because of the lack of jumpscares or any startling moments. However, I did enjoy the plot. It is a pretty iconic horror movie that you must wtach if you are into horror. While tame, the tension more then makes up for it. Just to be the flower on top, this movies climax contains possibly one of the best scenes in all of horror history. Then it sorta works, thanks to the attractiveness of its main actors as they follow the slimmest of clues to solve this mystery before their 'week' is up (it's quaint seeing people in this 1998 film having to call someone to research things for them that we simply Google now). How annoying, though, that these interesting-appearing characters are presented in such a sketchy manner -- what exactly are Ryuji's 'powers'; what is his wordless encounter with his son on the street about; and how can Reiko -- who constantly worries about her little-soldier son -- be such so irresponsible a parent as to willingly submit herself to the curse? And why a week's delay before the curse kicks in, and the silly phone call schtick? The ultimate back story is very hard to buy on its own 'merits', and a decent alternative ending could have been that Reiko survives the curse because she's the only one who shows *compassion* for the wrathful spirit-girl. But instead we get a sell-out ending as a concession to the producers to set up sequel mania, which has certainly paid off since. Worth seeing mainly to see what started the whole Ring phenom, which really only hinges on one goofy gimmick. Rated 2.5/5 Stars •  Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Deontae D Alright, I just seen the original 1998 Japanese ring today, I gotta say the original is better, It's good it had english subtitles, Because I don't know Japanese language, The 2002 ring is good too, Both are good, But the original will always be the best, I think they should stop remaking movies.
