Nell Minow Common Sense Media Outstanding family movie mixes comedy, action, romance. Rated: 4/5 Jun 13, 2012 Full Review Leslie Felperin Sight & Sound As good as most recent post-Katzenberg Disney films, and certainly -- with its stylised characterisation and bursts of witty dialogue -- a great deal better than the Mouse's turgid mega-budget epic Dinosaur. Kevin P A beautifully animated fun adventure film with a very likeable cast of characters. It's a very cozy and laid-back movie that feels like a relaxing vacation in this colorful and lush world they made in the mythical city of gold. Great voice acting and chemistry between Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh as Tulio and Miguel. Chel, the Chief, and the High Priest are also great (for one reason or another). Most of the musical numbers are just okay, but "It's Tough to be a god" is super catchy and has great colorful trippy visuals to go along with it. I also appreciate how there's no cliche "Liar revealed" moment. Instead the chief playfully and subtly reveals his knowledge of Miguel's ruse after Miguel as already proven his integrity and appreciation for El Dorado. I also loved the ancient basketball game with the armadillo switch-a-roo. The movie isn't perfect, but it's very charming and underrated in my book! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Audience Member 25 years old and it isn’t a perfect animated film by Dreamworks but still holds a special place in my heart Featuring the voice talents of Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Rosie Perez, Armand Assante, and Jim Cummings The movie focuses on two rapscallions in 1519 from Spain, Tulio and Miguel They like to play by their own rules even though they’re wanted criminals and they manage to stowaway on one of the great conquistador Cortes’ ships After falling overboard they wind up in a vast jungle ashore with a map that leads to the legendary lost city of gold, El Dorado Mistaken for gods both men decide to take advantage of this con; they act out this ploy long enough to take enough gold and make their way back to Spain wealthier men But how long can they keep it up? Tzekel-Khan the high priest hopes their arrival shifts power to him but after finding out their secret he has his own agenda The two men also have the help of a fellow horse Altivo and fellow El Dorado native Chel who wants out of the city I saw this at age 10 finding it very colorful and enjoyable The animation is gorgeous blending with the occasional CGI, there plenty of good laughs, Kline and Branagh bounce wonderfully off each other being reckless and romantic as well as practical and frustrated, Perez as Chel is a funny, spunky woman adding a lot to the trio, and the music is beautifully composed The climax is actually pretty fun and intense too especially when both men have to choose between staying forever or leaving with their earnings Even the songs by Tim Rice & Elton John attempt to add a bit of flavor, after all this is their second collaboration since ‘Lion King’, many of them are toe tapping Although it’s probably trying too hard to emulate that at times It’s no secret that Dreamworks was almost riding on the heels of the post Disney Renaissance of animation, many of the entries after 1999 weren’t pulling in big box office numbers so other studios were trying their hands Executive producer Jeffery Katzenberg had the idea to adapt the age of discovery into an animated adventure inspired by those road movies of Bing Crosby days although he had to deal with such creative challenges from the studio executives altering his script entirely from being grown up to a friendly kids story Most of the directing credit instead went to Eric Bibo Bergeron and Don Paul It was also disliked by many Indigenous rights organizations for some whitewashing history as well as being geographically different So even though the movie only made $74 million it still worked for a lot of people mainly how catchy the songs were, iconic characters, and the large amount of GIFs and memes on the internet being ingrained into pop culture It’s also gained a bit of a following since its release The real treasure is friendship, we are not the only ones who dream of freedom and adventure, sometimes having no plan makes it interesting The writing is very good in this even if other elements fall flat or don’t reach grand heights of cinema like many others but it has a wholesome story to have it get by next to the two comedic leads Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Mitchell S It's predictable, the characters have heavy plot armor, and I don't like the ending. But it is a beautiful movie visually, and it still has its moments. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/25 Full Review Garrett B Humor was pretty weak and the story felt a bit underwhelming though the animation was splendid and the soundtrack was solid Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review Ryland C Just a fun film with a clever story and genius comedy. I LOVE IT! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Antonio Vladimir M questo film e un po troppo sottovalutato dalla critica anche se e meraviglioso Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
