Rated 4.5/5 Stars •  Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Insomniac X Hitchcock transposes Patrick Hamilton's stage play to screen in this masterfully arranged sequence of long takes and tracking shots. Rope provides a precursor to the formula used in "Columbo," in which a carefully planned murder witnessed by the audience is slowly unraveled by a dogged interlocutor. The audience knows that this story can end only one way, but the journey there is an effectively tense and chilling one. Rated 3.5/5 Stars •  Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/25 Full Review Kevin P God damn, this movie had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Right out of the gate the movie hits you with the murderous reveal as we spend the rest of the movie watching two murderers hosting a party of their victim’s loved ones right next to his corpse in a seemingly never-ending stream of uncomfortable tension and dark humor as these two sociopathic egomaniacs try to live put and charade their narcissistic fantasies. The murderous duo are so charismatic and bicker like an old married couple that you almost forget that they just killed someone and are doing such horrible things. I love the subtle displays of Brandon‘s sociopathy without ever explicitly stating it for exposition. The final monologues building up to the climactic reveal and refuting the fascistic eugenics rhetoric behind this murder are fantastic and bone chilling with such a hauntingly powerful ending thanks in large park to Jimmy Stewart and the main two leads. The cinematography is terrific with mimicking the stage play live performance feel of the movie by appearing to take place in real-time with one lang take like a rope is so impressive for the restrictions of the time. It’s an underrated classic of Hitchcock and surprisingly one of my favorites of his. This felt more like a logical and natural stream of events than something like Vertigo or Psycho, and the suspense of this film kept me closer to the edge of my seat every minute. The top notch writing, cinematography, and acting make this an essential bottle thriller. Rated 4/5 Stars •  Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review Dan R Alfred Hitchcock's 'Rope' may well have been released in 1948 but it's still as powerful today as it was back then. SYNOPSIS: 'Two men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death.' I'm not sure Hitchcock ever made a bad movie and, for me, 'Rope' is one of his best. It's a benchmark for which the intricate nature of the killer's mind can be simplified into immense clarity, and the skill Hitchcock had in delivering so much with so little. 'Rope' is a fascinating experiment in trying to find the cinematic equivalent to a play, with the camera constantly searching for the next clue. It's a complex and dazzlingly unique picture.
