Adapted from Craig Silvey's best-selling novel, Runt is a heartfelt and hilarious contemporary Australian family feature film set in the country town of Upson Downs. It tells the story of ten-year-old Annie Shearer and her best friend, an adopted stray dog called Runt, as they attempt to win the Agility Course Championship at the Krumpets Dog Show in London in order to save their family's farm from drought and misery.

I really enjoyed this Australian movie, the quintessential Aussie battler family story. Very sweet partnership of Annie Shearer and Runt the extremely fast canine albeit nervous in front of a crowd. A great Aussie cast with Lily LaTorre perfect as Annie.

There were a couple of early references to old - but real businesses. When the runt stole sausages, the butcher's name was "Grubb". There was a long-standing butcher's "W.A. Grubb & Co" at 145 George St Sydney - photo here https://rocksdiscoverymuseum.com/place/145-george-street There also seemed a reference to "golden fleece" - formerly a well-known petrol company. Though the area in WA was clearly a wheat-growing one. I also marvelled at being able to get hold of a VW utiliy with a back seat and double doors. There otherwise didn't seem any CGI (I hoped). You can be proud of the film, people of York.

There are certainly some warm and enjoyable moments in the movie, but not enough of them to save it from a very average ending. Some of the characters were over-the-top caricatures, while others seemed more grounded, interesting, and relatable. The way the stroy wraps up is unexpected and not at all satisfying, and the movie unnecessarily introduces inappropriate themes for a kid's movie.
