Rustin Reviews
In 2 minds on this movie. Whilst undoubtedly a technically well made movie and really well acted, especially Coleman Domingos as Rustin, and the story is interesting, I got a bit bored in some parts and dragged a little. It's hard not to be inspired by the overall feat of what happened and it the movie does convey the achievement but I wish there was more of the day.
After watching Rustin on Netflix, I felt inspired and deeply moved. The film beautifully brings to light the legacy of Bayard Rustin, a hero of the Civil Rights Movement who deserves to be remembered. I was captivated by his strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to justice, even in the face of immense challenges. The story left me feeling both humbled and uplifted, grateful to have witnessed the journey of a remarkable man whose impact on history is finally receiving the recognition it deserves. Rustin is a powerful, heartfelt tribute that stays with you long after the credits roll.
Well acted and a positive story that I hadn't known about before without graphic sex and violence.
Domingo's acting is great and the story is inspiring with it culminating in one of American history's important events.
Sadly Rustin only standout is Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin in which he totally deserved that nomination for his performance. Other than that it just your stereotypical bland documentary. Nothing to remember cheap looking shallow development and doesn’t have much to say which is sad because the Civil Rights Movement was such a important time in human rights history
A nice look at the title character and a moment in time, good acting, nothing really special.
As it's reputation led me to expect - Domingo is excellent in a very ordinary movie.
I'm on a journey to watch all of the 2024 Oscar Nominees, and next on my list was Rustin, a compelling if generic biopic with some great performances, Colman Domingo easily being the highlight as the title character, Bayard Rustin. I think this film did a good job at telling the story it was trying to tell, and I learned quite a bit about his idea for the march, as well as the march itself, but I didn't feel I learned a lot about Rustin himself, though I do know a lot more about him now than I did before I watched this film, as before this I had never heard of him before. I think this film could've easily been a 3½-star film and possibly even a 4-star if it went deeper into his character, rather than just some of his actions. Despite what other reviews have said, I didn't think that this film was boring, though that could also be because I haven't seen all too many biopics, with this either being my fourth or fifth. Though I enjoyed much of it at the time, there are quite a lot of scenes here that are forgettable, as this film really doesn't have much style to it. The cinematography is fine, but it's not anything to write home about. Overall, I would recommend watching this movie for Domingo's performance, but that's not to say you won't find enjoyment in other aspects, as I did.
Colman Domingo provides a fascinating and inspiring performance in Rustin. The film was perfectly written and performed.
Loved this film so much! Colman Domingo is incredible and plays the part with such nuance and soul. That man deserves an Oscar.
I have something to say but it didn't post last time so this is a test
This movie wasn't my cup of tea; the protagonist's manner of speech grated on my nerves, making it difficult for me to stay engaged with the film. The writing was decent but failed to hold my attention, resulting in a rather dull viewing experience that I struggled to get through.
Interesting character study of n historical figure who has been largely ignored.
It mostly works but I can't help but feel that something that focused on Rustin before or after the March on Washington might have been more daring.
A perhaps lesser-known story of the civil rights movement, this is about what you'd expect from a film of this genre, but that's a good thing. It's very well-executed and, especially, well-acted by Domingo. The star of the show for me is the writing though. Some of the lines are as excellent as they come. Quotes so good that you'd be forgiven in thinking they were said by the real Rustin and canonized in history books. Here is my favorite: "Each of us are taught in ways both cunning and cruel that we are inadequate, incomplete. And the easiest way to combat that feeling of not being enough is to find someone we consider less than -- less than because they are poorer than us or because they're darker than us, or because they desire someone our churches and our laws say they should not desire. When we tell ourselves such lies, start to live and believe such lies, we do the work of our oppressors by oppressing ourselves."
A great story, with amazing performances, but Mr. Domingo it's outstanding.
Perhaps the characters portrayed, the actors playing them, and even the story itself is let down by the structure of the film. Still, the story is an important one to be told and Domingo's performance is not to be missed.
Powered by an outstanding lead performance from Colman Domingo, Rustin is a thoroughly effective look at the man behind the March on Washington.
3.8 million people in Los Angeles and this Academy Award nominated movie is showing in one single theater! Seriously?! It sounds like a good bio story film that needs to be told, but no one can see it! Shameful. I imagine the rest of America will never have the opportunity to see it either, until they purchase a streaming service just to see one single movie. And you wonder why the theater chains are a failing industry? And meanwhile we are robbed of our money with outrageous ticket prices. Apparently movies are now only an exclusive club for filthy rich Hollywood media types.
