Critics Consensus

An amusingly perceptive comedy about the push and pull of friendship, Sacramento glows with charm even when its characters drive each other mad.

Coleman Spilde Salon.com “Sacramento” might not be about California’s capital per se, but it perfectly reflects the latent magic so many people have experienced in the city it’s named for, and the bonds people forge there. Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety Angarano has the showpiece role, but it’s Cera who proves himself, more than ever, to be a major actor. Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The prickly comedy of male-pattern personality collapse gives way to wisdom, something that “Sacramento” has in abundance. Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network Good acting and chemistry between Michael Angarano and Michael Cera save this movie and make Sacramento worth checking out. Rated: 7/10 Apr 18, 2025 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment It’s the sort of film that makes me want to spend more time with these people, which is never a bad thing. DeWayne as we go from children to adults that eventually have our own children, sometimes we don't seem to have it "all together" like everyone else seems to. this movie shows us how we may not all grow at the same pace, but we all grow eventually. I liked it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review jay V Too many plot holes, too much angst. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Charles Like an LA Native’s idea of what Sacramento looks like. Has some funny script moments but the two leads are just unlikable characters and the plot completely nosedives in the third act becoming completely detached from reality. It’s impossible to believe these characters act the way they do except for that they’re in a movie. If you like Michael Cera’s shtick it certainly helps but he’s just playing the same character as always and Kristen Stewart just doesn’t care and it shows. A pretty tone deaf display of men in deep committed relationships yet suffering from crippling learned helplessness. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Sara This movie made Sacramento look like were a bunch of hillbillies. The storyline was pointless and not funny at all, almost all the dialogue was drawn out, awkward and cringe. I hated this movie. Dont waste your time and money! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Marisa of Sacratomatoes It's like an outsider from the East Coast made a movie about a town they had no connection with. Sacramento is too prized to be called a movie with no pizazz. I gave it 67 rotten tomatoes. Hollywood should've given this to GRETA! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Dan As someone from Sacramento, hoping this would be a mini tribute to this blossoming city, there was not much Sacramento in it. 95% of the scenes were clearly filmed in studios in LA with a few external shots taken while driving a car.
