This movie is a mix of a romantic comedy and a drama. It’s about a regular student who falls in love with the valedictorian girl right after they graduate. The story is simple, and the movie falls somewhere in between. It doesn’t really have a clear ending to any of its issues or deal with any of its issues in much depth. In a way, it’s not a coming-of-age story or a romantic comedy. It’s the beginning of something, no matter what happens next. A few beautiful scenes with romantic and nostalgic tones. A bit flat overall, but it’s worth a watch.
I want to live in the 80s and have no job other than to go out with Ione Skye.
It's always boombox season 🙌🏻 🔊 Classic Crowe film that drags every emotion out of you that can possibly be had. Cusack's best performance I can remember and I only wish there were Ione Skye's at my all-boys high school 😕 I will now have Peter Gabriel stuck in my head for the rest of the week #InYourEyes
Lloyd Dobler is such a great role model. I've never seen a compelling portrayal of a guy succeeding at everything he does before, particularly while not being a macho dickhead.
Pretty standard coming of age tale with a young John Cusack providing the suave charm. A short and reasonable rom com. Watched on DVD.
A very enjoyable watch with tons of laughs. Could've gone without the implied sex though.
Sweet movie. Not sure how accurate this was at portraying high school or just post-HS teens, but it's pretty in-keeping w/ 80's movies. Cusack is always good. Taylor is good here as well. I didn't even recognize Adlon. Crowe did a solid job, esp. for his age and inexperience. Piven was lame, but... So much depends on Skye's performance, but I found it pretty avg. And I just did not see the reason for the dad's storyline turning out like that. Was Crowe just tired of the helicopter parent pushing for the kid's academic excellence for the ivy league career scenario? 3 stars
"I can't work for that corporation" in reference to the military is awesome. The side story of the corrupt dad is pretty weak and so weird for a movie like this.
I've been watching 80's films lately. I stumbled into this one and was surprised at how good it was. Definitely a cut above the rest in its genre. More sincere, real characters, and quite charming.
One of the worst films I’ve watched in a long time. There’s no way the ratings are this high.
The critic and audience reviews here make me wonder whether I know anything about movies at all. What I see is just this: A couple hook up and things move smoothly except there's a forthcoming problem, obvious from the outset; there's then a twist that leads to some drama, which is given about five minutes of screen time that sees some really poor acting; the relationship then continues, with an ending that makes it seem like urban life today is as simple as... as we all wish it were.
Phenomenal characters in a movie that absolutely holds-up after all these years. Still a go-to when I need a reminder that sometimes the best possible outcome in life is falling in love with a good person.
My favorite romcom. Wholesome, hilarious, and real.
I gave her my heart, all she gave me was a pen. The boombox to the window iconic no need to say anymore.
I really found this movie very entertaining and heartwarming. It was wicked good and I loved the entire plot. I thought John Cusack did a great job playing in this movie.
The Valedictorian of a Seattle area high school accepts a date with a someone so below her in so many ways (intellectually and ambition for example). But, he's nice, and somehow they fall in love (and it's believable). In 2002, Entertainment Weekly named this film as the best modern movie romance.
Clean fun high school coming off age antics. Well done with John Cusack & good supporting cast.
Does not offer what many look for in a romantic "comedy," especially one about teenagers. It's light on raunch, and devoid of the genre's archetypal characters; instead of your standard quippy, sardonic slackers, this film has the courage to present us warm blooded young adults who act vulnerable and CONFUSED. I think that's why a lot of the audience reviews here are negative... it's unusual for a teen movie to portray young people as being not particularly profound. I found this movie very cute and comforting. I love the meandering dialogue. It's reminiscent of long, unspectacular conversations with someone familiar. Very tender scenes between the two love interests, all done tastefully. The jukebox scene was perfect... it's ironic how the scene has been so completely twisted by countless imitations that this original version now actually manages to subvert what you may expect to happen. Great soundtrack too. A lot of people are commenting that the subplot feels contrived. I will say that it could have been fleshed out a lot more. But it does connect to the main story in a very important way at the end. It's certainly not "irrelevant" to the plot as some have claimed. Overall a very enjoyable film.
One of the few movies of my youth that's stood the test of time, along with Dead Poets Society and Dirty Dancing.
an enjoyable film, the relationship between the two grew gracefully.
