Scrooged Reviews
A very funny and sharp Christmas satire of late-80's 온라인카지노추천 consumerism and yuppie culture. It’s a fun self-aware twist on the classic Christmas Carol formula that’s elevated by Billy Murray and the rest of the cast’s great comedic timing and just the sheer insanity of everything that plays out in this version of Scrooge’s yuletide redemption. Bill Murray’s character is such an asshole in the best way possible and always keeps me guessing with what kind of horrible sh*t he’s going to say next. The reimagining of the ghosts of Christmas are all pretty creative and are very satisfying to watch them literally knock some sense into Scrooge. Karen Allen is very lovable and charming as Scrooge’s long-lost love, even if she arguably should’ve had a sharper tongue whenever she witnesses Scrooge’s crueler acts towards his coworkers and even her own coworkers. The ending is admittedly a little bizarre even for this story, but it’s still pretty entertaining and heartfelt by the end. Definitely an underrated cult classic for both Bill Murray and Christmas fans alike.
Bill Murray’s overacting ruins this ‘modern’ retelling of Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic. Scrooged has enough charm to spread Christmas cheer, but it bites off more than it can chew and verges on annoying by the end.
I’ve never noticed before how non existent Bill Murray’s acting skill are. He was incapable of wearing anything other than a mildly amused expression, even when sadness, madness or any other emotion was needed. The script it weak and it’s just generally a waste of time! Or maybe it’s just this film, he did it because he needed the money and thought it was terrible too so didn’t put any effort in!
Dark, funny, kind and different version of The Christmas Carol. Bill Murray is terrific and hilarious and the make-up effects looks splendid and Danny Elfman score is spectacular it really feels like Tim Burton's vision of Scrooged.
Really disappointing, unfunny take on Scrooge with Bill Murray screaming and overdoing it throughout. Should have been better. Too forced.
Great reworking of a classic tale! Love every aspect of it!
Perhaps one of the most underrated Christmas movies. Bill Murray is perfect in the lead role. The movie is humorously playful without undermining the theme of A Christmas Carol. As the years have past the opening over the top satirical scene of Christmas specials has turned out to be every bit as prophetic as Alvin Toffler's Future Shock. Don't beleive me? Check out last year's Violent Night as well as the lesser low budget violent Christmas movies out there. These didn’t exist in the 80s.
Scrooged sits at a somewhat perplexing 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. This feels… odd. It's a film I consider a Christmas classic, and while I’m not always the biggest Bill Murray devotee, his films usually garner a strong following regardless of critical reception. Scrooged is, at its core, a hilarious and clever reimagining of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It takes the familiar tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and transplants it into the cutthroat world of 1980s television. Most of the jokes land perfectly, though I have to admit, some of the physical humor doesn't quite hit the mark – a bit ironic, considering the film's often over-the-top nature. The ghosts, however, are a definite highlight. Each one is wonderfully eccentric and memorable in their own right. From the cab-driving Ghost of Christmas Past to the terrifying Ghost of Christmas Future, they bring a unique energy to the story. The parallels between Bill Murray’s Frank Cross and Ebenezer Scrooge are expertly drawn. Both characters are deeply cynical and dismissive of the spirit of Christmas, but the increasingly surreal and unsettling experiences they endure slowly but surely chip away at their hardened exteriors. It's fascinating to watch Frank, a man who has clearly prioritized his career above all else, confront the consequences of his choices. And let’s talk about the women in this film. Karen Allen is simply radiant as Claire Phillips. She embodies warmth, kindness, and everything good about the holiday season. Alfre Woodard as Grace Cooley is also fantastic. The film makes you root for Frank to get a second chance with Claire, to rediscover the goodness he’s lost along the way. So, while Scrooged may not be universally hailed as a masterpiece, it holds a special place in my Christmas heart. It's a fun, funny, and ultimately heartwarming reminder of the importance of kindness and compassion. And for me, that's what Christmas is all about.
Just re-watched Scrooged for the first time in a while, and it's actually better than I thought as a retelling of A Christmas Carol. Peter Venkman is back and this time he's in charge of a television company. There's a lot of satire at the expense of the medium, and a fair few guest turns from people as diverse as Tony Steedman and Robert Mitchum. One of my favourite credits is "24 frame video displays" which made me realise that the 온라인카지노추천 monitors all over the studio hadn't been flickering, which they normally would do. It's funny when the time-travel dial on the taxi is set on 1987, which means "present day" (though is now 35 years ago). Annie Lennox and Al Green's terrific cover of Put A Little Love In Your Heart closes the film, and again, I'm surprised by how long ago it was.
What a load of crap. Being based on a classic story, this movie suffers from predictability making the "filler" content all the more painstakingly dull to sit through. Every female in the film is either stupid or used for one of their many "jokes" around sexual innuendos which have a constant presence that the movie is so perversely in love with. All ending with a cheap "be a good person" message that just falls flat due to the uninspired attempt to "be a good Christmas movie." But the acting is decent and it has a few good jokes. Should have ended with the first ghost tho.
Bill Murray carries the movie. Different take on a Scrooge movie. Worth watching.
SCROOGED has its moments, but its cynicism is overshadowed by a saccharine, rushed finale that may leave the audience and fans of Murray’s trademark irony feeling cheated.
Only christmas movie i care about... after die hard. Still works today. Only Murray can play a soulless millonaire a**hole suit in a lovable way.
One of the must see Christmas movies every year
This movie has ages exceptionally well even after 36 years. One of the many interpretations of A Christmas Carol, and one of Bill Murray’s best roles. The humor, storytelling and pacing make it a holiday must see tradition.
Who in the heck thought this was a good movie? Everyone I know suggested this as I'm a big movie buff and love Christmas. They said it's a must watch every year and that I'm missing out... I can honestly say they're the ones missing out on an hour and 40 minutes they could be using to watch or do something 100 times better. I can't believe this is a "classic." It's erratic, unfunny, the performances are everywhere, you can't hear anything anyone is saying half the time. The mannerisms of the main character are beyond mean and borderline psycho vibes and Bill Murray just YELLS HALF THE TIME and it freaking SUCKS. Why can't Bill Murray just shut up along with half the cast and act normal. He can be a jerk without acting like a 4 year old the whole time. My wife hasn't seen it either and asked what the h*ll was going on every 10 minutes. There's not a single thing to look forward to and I will never show this to my children as this would make them hate christmas movies and rot their brains to useless mush. Watch something better, don't waste your time.
It’s good to have an adaption which doesn’t stick exactly to the book and period that it is set in. I really like the Ghost of Christmas Past in this version, one of the best. Sadly I think the redemption and ending lose focus somewhat and the flow and feel is a bit off.
For me, the make or break deal of any Scrooge adaptation, and I'm sure this is probably around number 842, is whether or not you believe Ebenezer's about-face at the end. In this case, I did not. There are some individually good scenes and performances, but in the end it didn't matter because I was left cold when my heart should have been rending and my eyes filling with tears. I know, I know... it's a comedy. But still, one should get a bit of the feels with a story like this. A lot of the problem lies with Murray, or my perception of Murray as a performer. I have a great deal of trouble taking him seriously - something like LOST IN TRANSLATION was a marvelous exception. When he's visiting past, present and future and we see the tears well up in his eyes, I'm just waiting for a smart aleck retort to soon follow. It's virtually impossible to make an emotional connection to him here. That being said, lots of bits and pieces work well. I loved the skewering of bad Christmas 온라인카지노추천. I loved the warmth that Allen and Woodard bring to their limited roles - Allen has a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts. I liked Carol Kane as the Ghost of Christmas Present although the masochism got to be a little bit much at the end. Heck, I even thought Bobcat Goldthwait was tolerable. This is not unwatchable by any means, but in the pantheon of Dickens adaptations, this is probably toward the middle, at best. (UPDATE: I originally gave this **1/2 but after a re-watch decided to increase it to ***. I still basically agree with my assessment, but I think I was a bit hard on Murray, and everything seemed to work just a little bit better than I thought upon my first viewing. I even found myself a bit verklempt at the end. And that Karen Allen smile continues to melt my heart.)
It's really good and really well made overall. This moves at a really fast pace. the only thing is the cinematography while still solid thanks to the crazy antics, solid effects, and memorable scenes can feel a bit messy at times and really lacking a style to anything. It definitely doesn't feel like a Christmas film half the time visually and could've been improved in that department. The other issue is sometimes the drastic and sudden change in tone from zaney Burton like comedy to sentimental scenes can be very jarring and sudden with no segway. It definitely could've been smoother. However it's easy to overlook because it's solidly funny tthe whole way through for the most part and Murray does a great job as does the whole cast. Allen is really likeable also. The humor and crazy scenes are memorable and work but sometimes it can feel like it's dumbing down (or being too mean) the source material at times especially scenes with the Ghost of Christmas Present which is arguably the weakest part. She isn't bad but definitely isn't that funny and extreme crass slapstick isn't what Dickens had in mine when he wrote this I'm sure. However, it succeeds at being a modern 80's take on a timeless tale. anyone who is a fan of the source material, any actors in this, the director, or Christmas flicks will like this.
