Blu B It's like a poor version of Giant or Raintree Country kind of stuff. It's just a big nothing burger kind of. Everything is just alright about it. Just enver ramps up, never breaks down, it just goes slow and steady the whole way for better or worse. Plenty of production value, great actos, an amazing director, and a epic story across a generation....and yet it just feels like I barely remember what I just saw after 2 hours. Tracy & Hepburn don't really have much chemistry in this. Everyone else is super forgettable including Douglas. I think the issues is this film follows the typical epic drama beats you'd expect but it never really fully develops the characters into something unique or special. We're just introduced to all these characters right from the start without much background and their married. Than stuff just kind of happens over time. It just sort of meanders and never really shows in a clear concise or visually interesting way the breakdown/buildup of their relationship and place in society. We never really see them develop relationships with the kids, Douglas or Tracy interact or develop hate for each other in any meaningful way. We're just told hey they don't like each other now or hey the kids have grown up now care about them especially the son. The whole Son drama kinda comes out of nowhere at the end and just sort of ends after not seeing Hepburn for awhile. I didn't really care about any characters, it looked like every other Western I've ever seen, and it really didn't have any message. Just a Western Epic Melodrama that just hit the normal beats, kind of went nowhere, and did nothing to distinguish itself. It's also shocking how the direction is just...alright and feels pretty basic too. John Ford this isn't. Skip This. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Steve D Ok but only because of the cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched it just for Tracy and Hepburn... Love them usually, and this movie is okay but there is indeed far better fare out there!!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this film. Very important message about the farming practices that had been learned by the time ths film was made. Plowing up the grasses on the plains in Oklahoma had contibuted to the mass migration of the Okies in the lates 20's and early 30's. Watch Ken Burns film on this topic, and you will see how relevent the story is in this film, especially Tracy's explanation in the early scenes at the court trial. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member kazan plus spencer/hepburn = good stuff Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member the direction is great, and katharine hepburn and spencer tracy give phenomenal performances, but "the sea of grass" is overly long and never as interesting as it could have been.
