Arthur D I don't quite know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasnt what I saw. And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. Sherlock Holmes: Mare of the Night is more than a film—its an experience. The story immerses you in a world where shadows tell secrets, the atmosphere speaks volumes, and every frame feels like a carefully painted canvas. Its a hauntingly intimate portrayal of a Sherlock we rarely see: broken, weary, and grappling with the darkness hes spent a lifetime chasing. The film dares to ask: what happens to a mans soul when its consumed by the evil he fights? Through its masterful use of lighting, cinematography, and an almost dreamlike narrative, were drawn into his torment and taken on a visually stunning and emotionally gripping journey. You quickly forget that this is an independent film—it punches well above its weight, delivering the kind of quality and depth that rivals any blockbuster. Its a love letter to cinema as an art form, a rare gem in todays explosion-filled, story-starved landscape. This isnt just a movie for fans of Sherlock—its a must-see for anyone who appreciates suspense, horror, and the pure artistry of film. Its a bold, beautiful reimagining that lingers with you long after the credits roll. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Max M I'm a dyed in the wool Sherlockian (read the books, they're great!) so I'm hard to please. Overall, the plot was not very Canonical, though it could fit in sidewise, if you squint. There was some cheesy horror stuff, but I'd say if you liked any of 1.) Mr. Holmes (Ian McKellen), 2.) The Abominable Bride episode of BBC Sherlock (the Christmas Special set in Victorian London), 3.) 7% Solution, or 4.) horror flicks like Hereditary (2018) or Annihilation (2018) that are cerebral and picturesque, or 5.) you're just a fan of _well-made_ indie films, it will be enjoyable. There's one plot element that I will only discuss with viewers after they watch it (or confirm that they don't intend to ever watch), but that I thought was very interesting in a Sherlockian/Canonical way. I think that's the sign of a well-written film (or at least one with a compelling statement). I recommend you watch it, but I can't tell you you'll love it. The filmmakers are very good at what they do and they turned empty sets into imposing, atmospheric, and haunting spaces through creative use of lighting and mood. The lead actor carried the whole thing. Les Best really puts in a star turn here. The rest of the cast were fine but not stellar—he makes the film (and yes, the beard was real!). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Rich P I posted this as I saw someone said the photography was bad. I usually despise dark film, this was nice in a dark theatre and in direct contrast to light, when Sherlock over comes. I wish the use of white was more prominent at that point. The acting was fine. The script? A little bit opaque and esoteric for me. The agony of "the Mare" is apparent and prolonged.... excruciatingly so for the audience. Was that on purpose? I was quite uncomfortable and hoping it would end. A lot of good photography work, did the director not want to leave a whole bunch of it on the cutting room floor? It was a bit much. Very professional indie film by competent people. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Richard T This is very different from any Sherlock Holmes movie or story you've read or watched. The cinematography and score are first rate, as is the lighting and editing. The screenplay is a bit talky. I think director C.J. Goodwyn would be better served to show more and tell less. The cast are all competent in their roles, but Michelle Masker is especially effective as Elissa Croft, a mysterious villainous figure. She pretty much steals the big scene in which she appears. Make an effort to see this if it comes to your town. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review John W This film is a truly unique take on a Sherlock Holmes story. It is part horror and part psychological thriller. The performance of the lead actor as Sherlock Holmes is amazing. The cinematography really added to the dark and eerie tone and was quite unsettling. If you are a fan of thrillers, horror or Sherlock Holmes you should really check this one out! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Tatum C As someone who is really into movie making, I thought the use of the same setting with different emotions and situations was clever. The portrayal of Sherlock Holmes as a crazy old man suffering from trauma is an awesome portrayal of that character. I got to talk to Taylor King and she is an awesome actress. Thanks for the movie CJ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
