Sixteen Candles Reviews

John Hughes wrote and directed films that anybody could enjoy. A lot of his films were family-friendly. And now are considered timeless classics. The soundtracks to his movies were just as awesome as the films themselves. I think it's cool that he used a lot of the same actors and actresses in his movies. John Hughes not only made movies the teenagers can enjoy but so could adults. 16 candles is one of the best teen movies of the '80s. It really captures the essence of being 16. In a funny and satirical way. It's one of the few movies worth watching more than once.

A cinderella 80's spin that captures the time, the music and teenage feel of what growing up 80's was really like.

As "endearing" as one might find this on the surface thanks to Molly Ringwald's performance, hard pass for any future viewings. I love John Hughes films but this one pissed me off with the mouth-gapingly obnoxious Asian stereotype. So obnoxious, in fact, that at best one might call it "intentionally ironic". And oh yeah, it does get pretty rapey in the car scenes.

A very John Hughes take on romance and high school and all things related. Melodramatic for sure, but also relatable themes and scenarios abound. Anthony Michael Hall does an amazing job as always here - despite some very creepy situations. All things considered, this is a must-see for anyone that remembers growing up in the 80's.

Amazing cast and crew. This movie gets high school RIGHT. Amazing soundtrack as well!

One of my go to classics.

I was surprised that this movie is regarded as more mature than other 80s teen comedies but I guess the bar was just that low.

Sixteen Candles is a typical eighties teen comedy. The characters are shallow, the plot is simple and nothing really happens over the 90 minute run-time. Is this movie just a 16 year old girl's dream? If so, it would make a bit more sense, because nothing that happens is very realistic. I get that it's a classic, but there wasn't much that I enjoyed about it. I actually thought that the foreign exchange student, Long Duk Dong, was one of the highlights. It's unfortunate that there was always an Asian gong playing every time that he spoke, because it crossed the line into the racially insensitive. Ultimately, I would say that Sixteen Candles is a fine movie. There is plenty of angst to go around and the plot jumps around, but there is still a bit of the John Hughes charm in there. Best Character: The Geek Best Quote: "That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call 'em something else." - Jim Best Scene: The Talk with Dad Note: I don't understand how there was 0 interaction between the two leads until the final 5 minutes.

The soundtrack is everything about this movie! It's a good movie for its time and a nostalgic film for now! I loved the relationship between the father and daughter; it was Iconic to see both sets of grandparents show the Generational difference at the time! It's a great movie to have playing in the background. I adored the ending!

Samantha Baker, a typical Chicago suburban teen from the 80s, finds out everything is going wrong on her 16th birthday...Except that ironically, on this, the worst day of her life, the boy of her dreams, Jake Ryan, has finally noticed her... So...At the time when this came out; this was considered to be "Animal House with a Heart" with the critics. You have to look at this through that lense...It was a teen raunch-party movie that also allowed for some compassion and depth for it's lead characters, not just a raunchy, iconoclastic, sex themed farce. (Compare this with a similarly themed movie that came out that year, Bachelor Party; for example; which was another Animal House type party- farce; focusing on a lot of parties and pranks and mischief making...And two guys fighting over the same girl...Etc... But whereas THAT was much ado about nothing and had no soul...THIS movie actually CARED about it's characters...And represented a maturing of Hollywood's tastes in this type of storytelling)... And the kids LOVED 16 Candles because it appealed to both their partying, rebellious sensibilities; but also loved the characters enough to pay attention to their issues and give them a real happy ending. It was just the right combination of sweet and sour...That's why kids all adopted this movie at the time as THE big YA rom/com...But no one was really prepared for what John Hughes did next...Because if 16 Candles tweaked the formula Hollywood teen drama; The Breakfast Club completely revolutionized it. Overall: Thumbs up 👍 Fun and adventuresome teen farce is entertaining; and it also has it's fair share of cringe; but overall it's a warm comedy about coming of age with it's heart in the right place. With fantastic star making performances by both Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall; in a clear prototype for Ferris Buehler... Also a must for 80s Nostalgia Fans...Infact the Hughes Teen Movie Trilogy is universally recognized now as THE most important movies in Hollywood's coming-of-age cannon. Highly Recommended

The stupidest movie I've ever watch, I couldn't even laugh because it was so stupid. Hate the way the movie forcefully makes fun of Asian people and even the way the characters in the movie are as stupid as they've ever been.

One of the best 80s teen movies. Nostalgia is off the charts!

That was bad acting, stupid jokes, shallow characters and the story wasn't even remotely believable. The teenage angst was good and so was the music.

John Hughes understood teen angst better than anyone. What would happen if your family forgot your 16th birthday? This movie defined an era and will never stop being funny!

Oooph, this really did not age well. I was honestly pretty shocked by how rapey it is. I just can't see past that.

Perfect story, acting, and casting. I was 14 years old when this movie came out back in 1984. Sadly, I missed seeing it in the theatre when all my girlfriends went together cuz I was on a date (Im just now realizing that my parents let me date at 14?!? What were they thinking?). Anyway, my girlfriends talked about the movie for months and months and I couldnt wait for it to finally be released to video it seemed to take forever! Fast forward to 2023 and Im taking my 14-year old son to see Sixteen Candles for the first time today. Wow, even though Ive seen it 100or maybe 1000 times on 온라인카지노추천, what an incredible experience it was to watch it in the theater for the first timeAND with my teenaged son by my side! He LOVED the movie, just like his mom! Maybe in 40 years, my son will be taking his son or daughter to watch Sixteen Candles for the first time, too! Grandma (yours truly) will be there melting over Jake Ryan, just like she did in the good old days!
