Critics Consensus

Laugh-out-loud funny and endearingly messy, Sleepwalk with Me overcomes its tonal inconsistencies to deliver a sweetly melancholic, amiably reassuring indie crowd-pleaser.

Caitlin Wood Bitch Media There is genuine humor with disability, and this particular film is an honest, earnest, and entertaining reflection of that truth. Jan 13, 2021 Full Review Chase Whale Film.com This self-deprecating comedy would make both Larry David and Louis C.K. proud, Nov 8, 2013 Full Review Violet Lucca Film Comment Magazine However, there's something ultimately unsatisfying about the experience of listening to stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia tell the true story of his inability to marry his longtime girlfriend (played by the far-too-hot-to-be-with-him Lauren Ambrose). Jun 28, 2013 Full Review Scott Nye Battleship Pretension Birbiglia is endlessly self-aware, but expresses no true awareness of the self. Mar 10, 2021 Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com The conversion between mediums is flawless, as it gains a variety of story expanding tricks this time around that can only come with the visual format. Feb 9, 2020 Full Review Molly Templeton Eugene Weekly (OR) Sleepwalk [With Me] takes familiar material and twists it slightly, bringing new themes into focus even as it relies heavily on [Mike] Birbiglia's tales of screwy gigs, stoic audiences and downright dangerous sleepwalking episodes. Rich S It's too long for a comedy set and maybe a little too short for a motion picture. Sleepwalk with Me probably falls best under the heading of "experimental" movies with Birbiglia making his debut as a director and is the centerpiece of the story as an actor. The acting is good. He's playing himself. And, he made three excellent choices in Lauren Ambrose (as his love interest) and, as his parents, James Rebhorn and Carol Kane. You won't be bowled over, but you will get a meaningful story of a man and an ailment that has, at times, put his life in danger. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review David R Birbiglia's character is flaccid and dull. I wanted to throttle him. I'll admit I could not get through the film. For me, it might as well have been called Let Me Put You To Sleep. Lauren Ambrose and Carol Kane, both talented actors, were wasted here. What a disappointment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/29/25 Full Review Brad O This film is 13 years old, so if you've seen Mike Birbiglia's stand up specials, this is a bit old hat. But, I did like seeing all of the celebrities in it who have since had big careers. If you haven't seen Birbiglia's stand up specials, this is basically an indie film love story that concludes with his most famous story about him sleepwalking and jumping out the window at a La Quinta Inn. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Dean E Wow, just when you would think that a life of $20 a night comedian could not get any worse..............watch this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It's boring, long-winding & poor quality drama. I stop half way Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Great story, well told. I have listened to the original stand up it was based on several times and it was a joy to see it played out on the screen. PLUS Carol Kane! I mean, come on!
