Linda Barnard Toronto Star Small Time plays out in plodding fashion that seems engineered to keep the audience at arms' length. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 21, 2014 Full Review Bill Edelstein Variety Coming-of-age drama delivers some laughs, but loses its way when things gets serious Apr 21, 2014 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times "Small Time" is agreeably sentimental meat-and-potatoes fare with strong dashes of humor, executed with a sincerity that's hard to resist. mark g Good talent, a lot of laughs, interesting enough story. I was entertained. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Andrew F A cute movie that I came across on Amazon Prime. Not necessarily time wasted, more likely an opportunity wasted as far as I am concerned: 1) What was the whole point of the initial plot where the young car "thief" was conned into buying the car that he tried to steal. It seemed to fizzle into nothing. 2) What about Al Klein and his girlfriend Linda? Did they forget that they'd cast her and had shot a whole scene with her only to not use / mention her again. That was a whole plot that could have been developed more but was not. 3) What was the point of the character of Gail? Ashley Jenssen is such a three-dimentional actress - was this just a re-hash of her dizzy character from Extras? A whole bunch of sub-plots about her pay rise and her inability to follow paperwork and her protesting to Freddy about his treatment of her that were just thrown in there and left to fizzle out. 4) The whole ending was a little inconclusive. A letter from Freddy to Al, no closure between Barb and Al, no further mention of Linda. Left me feeling a little flat to be honest. 5) No closure for Martini either - we didn't see much from him at the end following the whole drama of the sacking of Freddie. Did Carlo Rota buy the Caddy? Did he find peace with his meaningless existence? 6) What was the actual point of the whole Deli situation? A lot of characters, a lot of good actors, a little undeveloped. Overall pretty good but a lot of stuff left floating in the ether! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Laurence M This movie was a random discovery. I'd never heard of it before but it engaged me from start to finish. It has a simple sounding plot but with subtle twists and a clever mix of low-key humor, realism and unpredictability. Good acting jobs throughout from the principals down to the minor characters. An engaging minimalist exercise set in a used car lot. No special effects. A real find. This semi-independent little gem is a funny, smart, heartfelt film that has a good script, smart direction, and great performances from the cast, especially Meloni and Bostick.
