Smokin' Aces Reviews
This movie simultaneously knows how dumb it is while also believing it to be way smarter than it is. The chaos it creates somehow works just because of that. It tries a bit too much in every aspect but it does feel like the intent was right, it just ended up a bit messy. I can see people hating this but it was just so much fun. The ensemble cast was fantastic and really brought their best with the material they got. The only character I cared about was Alicia Keys' but that didn't matter much when the philosophy of the movie felt a bit nihilistic but not in a completely hopeless way even though it can also be read like that.
Violent movie, an all-star cast, with a Tarantino influence. Jeremy Piven rocks it! Ryan Renolds good also... but the Piven close-ups sweating with coke on his nose are classic!
Hadn't seen this for over 10 years and wasn't as good as i remember, Convoluted, messy and very mediocre. Could of been so much better with such a top cast! Some cool moments and good to see Ryan Reynolds in a serious role, wish he did them more but yeah a wasted cast mostly and wouldn't watch again
Some story loopholes are to be overlooked to enojoy this fun action piece. While "Smokin' Aces" may not offer much in the way of deep storytelling or character development, it more than makes up for it with its sheer entertainment value. Big Buns and bigger fun.
What a mess they make. Gun shots… gun shots everywhere. I think that they put more that they can chew, but good ending.
By no stretch of the imagination is this any kind of a Comedy, but it IS one hell of an Action movie! It's messy, haphazard, stressful, but carries equal amounts of thrill and tension. The style has hints of Aronofsky (RFAD), and whilst people have suggested that it is no ‘Tarantino', I think that's a good thing. In and of itself, JC has directed an interesting, slightly oddball movie with a great cast, and brilliant scriptwriting. I cannot believe I have never seen this before now, but it is one I'll watch again for sure!
I ENJOY this film, it's one of the best in this high concept high action film and pacing. The cast and acting is really fantastic! Really this is a one of a kind movie and shit storm of a cross roads! It's like a more extreme more violent version of the movie Crash. Bravo to the entire team.
One of the last true Tarantino wanna be crime flicks this is a roller coaster of violence, deception, and racial insensitivity. Ryan Reynolds runs out of bullets and throws the gun at a building, if you can get down with this logic you'll love it!
Entertaining. Bad ending. As mid as it gets.
Awful, awful, senseless movie. I guess the idea was to fill the cast with stars to distract the audience from the ridiculous plot. Why was the one-eyed, child karate enthusiast included in the movie? I suppose for comic relief, but he wasn't funny. And when trained agents get shot at from a building across the way, the agents just start indiscriminately shooting their guns. Just so stupid. And why was Ben Affleck even in this movie other than to attract Ben Affleck fans to the theater.
I wanted to like it. It had a great cast. It just has so many moments that you roll your eyes and say, "that makes zero sense." Very confusing movie, but fun in a weird way. Worth a watch if you're bored, but don't expect to understand a lot of the pointlessness, unrelated back stories, or "surprise" ending.
An action flick where the story made sense, but still had some over the top cartoon moments that took away from this straight forward film.
Overly cluttered, poorly written, and nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is.
Could have been so much better. Good action
Well it was good but the hotel scenes with a lot of blood just a waste of rounds, the officers just fire without even knowing who to shoot just makes this ridiculous waste of gunfire. We never got to see Ben Affleck more or even a bigger role of El Estrago. Just the Tremors, Georgia Sykes, and Lazlo which is 3. I just expected more and it isn't something that I thought was enough.
Good popcorn flick to enjoy if your looking for action.
The end result is like leaving a pizza in the oven for 5 minutes longer than the instructions say; it might still be edible, but it's far worse than it could have been. The plot was convoluted, confusing nonsense full of predictable moments and unimpactful twists. There were also way too many characters, all of whom were introduced in quick succession, heavily underdeveloped, and people not worth rooting for. Furthermore, several were over the top unbelievable, like Mr mask maker, Mr Assassin's Creed, and the crew from Mad Max Fury Road. Others, like the main character, were bland and boring. Despite all this, it was surprisingly entertaining due to the near constant action for what felt like most of the runtime. The pacing was decent, the acting was adequate, the comedy was meh, the cinematography and visual effects were average, the sets/props/costumes looked fake some of the time, and the soundtrack was nothing special.
Wow I've never seen so many movie cliches and stereotypes packed into one film to the point where I wondered whether it was actually a spoof. If this is your first time ever seeing a mob movie please proceed to watch. Otherwise you are in for a disappointing experience. I was roped in by the oscar-laden and otherwise talented cast. Shame on Joe Carnahan the director for squandering the talent and misinterpreting the script...this was tailor made for Guy Ritchie who should have directed it.
