Soapdish Reviews
I love this movie! It was my absolute favorite movie as a kid growing up I laughed and laughed at this movie. Sally was great in it. The drama everything! I could watch it every week.
Unfortunately very dated now. A time capsule of stars when they were younger. Was better in the 90s.
A cornball bonbon with a "Who's Who" cast list, an excellent time capsule for anyone nostalgic for late 1980s/early 90s, and not a bad movie to boot.
So much personality, not gonna win any awards, but I really enjoyed this movie. It's not shot in a particularly interesting way, and the score is not Silvestri's best, but the casting was on POINT. Every character felt so naturally, and fit into the chaotic, corny nature of the film perfectly. Special note to the pairing of RDJ and Cathy Moriarty, they were hillarious. Also the plot was perfect for the Soap Opera theme. 80/100
I have a complicated history with this film. When I first saw it upon its release, I didn't like it at all. Revisiting it a few years later, I did a total 180 and considered it one of my favorite recent comedies. And now many years later, I find myself stuck in the middle of my two previous opinions. I love the farcical nature of the film - there are some wonderful sight gags and some witty repartee between the characters. And Field has a field day (pun intended) with the Susan Lucci-like main character. While it may not technically be her most "important" performance, I feel like it's actually one of her best. However, several of the supporting performances come across very one-note and bordering on the shrill, particularly Cathy Moriarty. But it's still a definite recommendation! The scenes lampooning daytime drama are often spot-on, and the cast is having such a great time, it's hard not to get swept away.
Plug in anywhere, anytime & the cast (omg) & brilliant script willing have you laughing into tears..
Cute little flick that lampoons daytime television. The irony is that it falls into the same tropes as its subject matter, by design I'm sure, but those convolutions make it feel more bloated than hilarious.
Yes, this is a really silly movie, but it's also funny and lots of fun. Anyone who has ever gotten caught up watching a soap opera will enjoy this movie.
Quite the assortment of actors here; Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Elizabeth Shute, Teri Hatcher, and the late Carrie Fisher On a soap opera lead actress Celeste couldn't be happier But the show's ratings are crumbling There's also the complication of her co-workers plotting against her due to her success and fame Montana and David plan to sabotage Celeste What better way than to bring back her ex Jefferey? Both of them have huge history and it starts creating real drama on set His lovely niece Lori is also part of the scheme Celeste might not be able to keep it together as old feelings start to resurface But Celeste starts breaking down revealing how much baggage she has off-stage and behind the camera 2 crazy bombshells are dropped that I didn't anticipate, that is some soap opera level writing that gets a few laughs The movie spoofs so many serialized dramas even if it's not as addictive as the material itself A change in location might've been welcome considering this whole thing takes place in a tv studio but it is embracing the genre with its colorful sets, wardrobe, and melodramatic antics It's a bit uneven but the cast makes it a silly romp
I have always LOVED this movie! I just came across it on Pluto and am watching it again. I don't think Sally Field has ever been better - she and the entire cast are amazing! BTW - They say it's much harder to "do comedy" than drama and I believe that to be true. It continues to be one of my favorite comedies throughout the years!
Out of 70 jokes, I laughed maybe 3 times. It makes no sense that a film looking at the behind-the-scenes of a soap opera would decide to turn the plot itself into a soap opera - with couples changing, secrets revealed out of nowhere and plotpoints that go nowhere. I was wondering if that was the joke, that life is sometimes like a soap opera. If that was the case then the film completely tossed it out the window for some weak jabs at celebrity and fame machine. The timing is really slow, lines that should be punchy come off as unrehearsed. Great cast, a great idea but not much to offer The best parts: - Young Robert Downey Jr. & Cathy Moriarty. They are great together and i wish the movie would have been all about them (minus the transphobia. That was just terrible, even if they kept it, i would still love for them to be a couple, they are that good). - Death of Salesman Theatre Dinner! - Gary Marshall as the boss of the company.
Maybe it's because I don't watch a lot of daytime dramas, but I don't think Soapdish is as entertaining as the movie thinks it is. This surprisingly star-studded comedy hams it up and expects the audience to laugh at every bit of melodrama, yet aside from a few amusing moments, it's bland and predictable. Sally Field is the performance to beat, and no one else in this movie is able to accomplish that.
One of my top 5 comedies of all time. I could watch it anywhere anytime.
SOAPDISH is an entertaining and campy send up of soap operas and the actors that star in them. Featuring an all star cast, the film clips along at a nice pace and has an engaging plot that will keep the viewer interested. The film draws obvious comparison with 1982's TOOTSIE, and is best when it Is able to avoid those similarities, although it comes dangerously close in the transgender twist that is revealed towards the end of the film. This plot twist may offend some younger viewers, but it didn't bother me. Although some may find it a bit lightweight, I would still recommend SOAPDISH to most viewers.
Super funny movie. Great acting, if I wanna laugh I turn on this movie. Plus, RDJ looks pretty cute in the glasses that he is wearing in the movie. There were some fun twists and it is one of my favs.
The opening credits are great. It reminds me a lot of 60's Hitchcock openings, inspired by Saul Bass. The writing for this movie is pretty clever because you got these soap opera actresses whose real lives are actually like a soap opera only their more conniving and have ill intent. I love how this movie is pretty much a parody towards soap operas and how everything is about the glitz, the glamour and the superficiality of it all. Cathy Moriarty always plays the best villains. Always so vindictive and out for herself, just like in the Casper movie. That scene at the Opa Locka where it shows that all of the audience is old retired people was so good. That's pretty much a lot of parts of Florida. Sally Field is really good in this movie. She shines in her role. And Kevin Kline, just as always, brings the laughs. Elizabeth Shue – young pretty fresh face. The whole premise of the show is so ridiculous that anybody who watches it and doesn't think that it's a parody on soap operas is actually an idiot who probably watches soap operas. Holy crap what a twist when Sally's character loses it right after the two were about to kiss. That scene where Sally's character is giving lines to Kline's character on how to be a father was so cleverly written. Everybody played their part beautifully. It was almost like watching a really good play at a theater with all of its surprises and memorable moments. Soapdish was a very well written and hilarious parody movie about soap operas and how outlandish and ridiculous they are but also doesn't neglect to touch on the real themes of life like love, being a parent for the first time, doing the right thing and being forgiving. I'd definitely watch it again.
TREMENDA PELICULA DE LOS 90! TIENE COMEDIA, DRAMA, ADVENTURA, ME GUSTO MUCHISIMO, ES UN CLASICO MUY ENTRETENIDO!!! UN 7.35👍
i'm a martinet about the films i like, the films i love, and the films i hate. SOAPDISH, i adore. i've rarely been so entertained so consistently by so many delightful performances, such a great script, and even the great costumes! the humor is both light AND scathing -- "it's a floor wax AND a dessert topping!" (for those of you who remember SNL's amazing Chevy Chase / Gilda Radner *parody 온라인카지노추천 commercial* from SNL's first season. back when SNL was REALLY funny. https://www.holdoutsports.com/2017/07/snl-new-shimmer-floor-wax-dessert-topping.html
