Sommersby Reviews
"Somersby, a cinematic rollercoaster that leaves you torn between applause and yawns. The stellar cast delivers great acting, with performances that elevate the film despite its shortcomings. The plot, initially promising, meanders between captivating and downright boring. The courtroom sequence is a standout, a shining moment that makes you wish the entire movie had the same pulse-pounding energy. While the script fails to maintain its momentum, the film's saving grace lies in its excellent soundtrack, setting the mood with finesse. The ensemble cast does their best, but the lack of a compelling twist at the end leaves you feeling unsatisfied. Somersby is a cocktail of highs and lows, a good watch for those seeking a mix of great acting and courtroom drama, but be prepared for the occasional dip into the realm of boredom."
Tonally, this movie was kind of all over the place. There are some interesting ideas, such as how much of our identity is based on who other people think or say we are and whether your good name is worth your life. On the whole though, this is the sort of movie you put on once and then never think about again.
Good not great. Gere and Foster make it compelling enough for one man’s love and sacrifice.
Great plot, great acting, I loved it
It's been a long time since I watched this, but it made an impact on me. Sad, emotional- he was trying to be the right person for once.
This movie would be much better with another female lead rather than Jodie
The actors are good but the script is dull.
A good film, if one that doesn't entirely hit every note it attempts. 'Sommersby' features a strong cast, with Richard Gere leading as Jack ahead of Jodie Foster (Laurel). Those two do have sizeable chemistry together, which makes a lot of the romance work here. James Earl Jones and Frankie Faison also add to the film in their respective roles of Isaacs and Joseph. The premise is no doubt interesting, as it keeps you thinking for the vast majority. It does cover quite a few bases, but I don't think it fleshes everything out perfectly; especially the racism parts. I'm not hating though, as it largely makes for a solid 109 minutes all in all.
Sommersby is difficult to Identify With. The plot of this glossy remake of a based-on-fact story leaves much to be desired – pacing is poor and too many situations just don't hold up. Most performances are good but its Jody Fosters film all the way. A big-budget was allocated to this production but somehow it never looks as convincing as it should. Romantics might enjoy the situations but anyone looking for believability might be better off seeking out the original. Still, good entertainment for the easily pleased.
I saw this because my old coworker Barry helped make this movie. Interesting idea, but wasn't really much else there.
Movie has several themes not of which really blend together coherently. Main action isn't really explained and doesn't follow from the character development in the setup. Not like in a cool surprise way, just in a really flat kind of, "what is this?" Kind of way.
Jodie has a very high IQ which can be seen in every production. Her acting abilities are truly admirable, as are Gere's here, yet she is not the type of "winning" female / wife / mother - she is simply herself.
I absolutely adore this movie. I love the mystery and the storyline. Missed chances at true love and Karma does come to visit.
A movie in the Hollywood old style of the 90s, with great adventures, great passion, great dramatisation. Sometimes it's be nice to have again movies like these.
I love this movie! Such a tear jerker. The chemistry between Richard Gere and Jodie Foster make this film makes the viewer believe that their characters are truly in love with each other.
Sommersby is an amazing film. It is Laurel Sommersby is just managing to work the farm without her husband Jack who is believed to be killed in the Civil War. Richard Gere and Jodie Foster give excellent performances. The screenplay is well written. Jon Amiel did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and mystery.
Excellent acting by Gere and especially Jodie Foster, but it moves too fast with too many unanswered questions. Did Jack really kill the dog? And it could have been more powerful if Orin would have suffered a few consequences for his spiteful actions.Excellent acting by Pullman as well. The ending could have been more... I was left hanging.
A movie you definatly need to watch twice, but I like how he refused to be the man he truly was even to his death.
