Spies Like Us Reviews

Mar 18, 2025

A couple of good scenes and one big laugh illustrate how good this Cold War comedy could've been, but, alas, most of it plays out with numbing indifference.

Spies Like Us isn't a terrific movie. But it's not a bad one either. It's very much of its time, with 1980s cold war concepts like the naughty Soviet Union being the enemy of good old Uncle Sam, as personified by who else? Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase. These two play their usual characters, but what's not usual is that the two are teamed up together. They're not an obvious pairing, as Chase's style is broader and more old-school, and Ayckroyd is more intellectual and knowing. I would imagine that it was originally written for a different pairing, but someone was unavailable. They work together, and director John Landis manages to calm down Chase's usual excesses, but hey, you don't employ Chevy Chase if you don't want Chevy Chase. The plot is a halfway decent spy adventure, and could have worked even without the comedy element. But by far my most favourite part of the film is the cameos from well-known directors, Terry Gilliam, Ethan Coen, Michel Apted, Larry Cohen, Sam Raimi and Martin Brest, as well as comic actor Bob Hope, and Thunderbirds special effects man Derek Meddings. Oh, and Paul McCartney's theme music, which was one of his last big pop hits.

Man the first 40 minutes is actually pretty solid and funny with great chemistry and gags by Chevy & Dan who got great chemistry at times. The problems start to show the moment in the middle when they operate on the guy and it just starts to lose focus and later commits the bigggest cardinal sin a comedy can do. It stops being funny. It's like as it goes on it relies more on its spy thriller plot for the comedy rather than the actors with an occasional laugh every now and than. It really dries up in terms of charm and fun the longer the second half goes. What's left without it is a serviceable spy plot that is ok at best and kind of stupid at worst. Everything about it is just ok honestly. It's amazing how much it just runs out of gas in terms of humor after the first 40 minutes. If your a die hard fan of Landis, Ackroyd or Chase than check this out. Otherwise most people can skip this. Chase is probably the best thing in this and isn't half bad even in the second half but is much stronger in the first half.

Good for a few chuckles and nostalgia, remembering the 80's. Chase and Aykroyd were a good team. Some sexy pretty ladies to brighten up the screen.

Not consistently funny enough.

This is a solid funny 80s movie and it has a unique plot that no one could even come up with these days.

Dated humour, and uneven pacing. I still found it funnier than the modern comedies I've been watching lately. There was one odd thing. Sometimes certain dramatic moments of music sounded like something out of Jurassic Park hehe. Like, it was short 1-2 notes. I can't say for certain that it's honestly worth watching now, because of how iffy the humour and story are. Something important about this film is that our fear of war, and our distrust of government officials has been here for a long time. New generations might benefit seeing this film so they can understand that they are not alone in their beliefs and experiences.

If you enjoy the main characters you'll enjoy the movie. Any film that can make me laugh aloud gets at least 3 stars.

A pure 80's funny cult classic with two of 80's biggest comedians

Funny enough, but still a bit mediocre

As usual the critics have no sense of humor when they watched this. This movie is funny, written well, has satire in it, and acted well. To all the crybabies who complained about this movie, you really are Karens!

A great 80s movie. Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd at their best. It is unbelievable to me that most people don't rank this right up there with Caddyshack.

A fun movie with laughs that are both hits and misses at the same time. Both of the amazing comedic geniuses bring very amusing characters to life as they find themselves in the most awkward of situations: It's not James Bond, Its Spies like us.

If you love Chevy and Dan, you will love this movie. If you hate them, you will hate it. It is that simple.

Great 80s movie. Chevy and Dan are amazing. You'll be quoting ot weeks after you see it. One of the more underrated films to come from the 80s. Plus a theme by Paul McCartney.

Hilarious, visually extravagant and cleverly written Cold War comedy is one of the most enjoyable films of the 1980's. Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are well suited to the roles of bumbling U.S. intelligence agents, and keep an eye out for the many superstar cameo's which are spread throughout the film.

A really great funny flick, and holds up. The rating is far to low for this movie.

Review: ‘Spies Like Us' is an American comedy film directed by John Landis. I've wanted to go on a Chevy Chase marathon for a while, I love his work and I think he is very funny. I assumed I would really enjoy everything he did, but this movie was rough. It's disappointing how bad this movie is. I mean you have Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd in the starring roles, John Landis directing and Dan Aykroyd as the writer. I don't know what went wrong, but it went wrong fast. The movie centers around two wannabe spies, Emmett Fitz-Hume and Austin Millbarge (Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd) who think that they're hired for a top-secret job, when in fact they're decoys for the real spies to get the job done. The acting in this movie is bad. I'm sorry, there is just no getting around it. Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are not good actors, but their movies are usually entertaining enough to surpass that. This one didn't have the entertainment value and the bad acting is front and center. It's not just the two leads either, nobody in this movie had a good performance. I liked some of the jokes that were in this movie, aside from that it's not worth viewing. The story wasn't there, and dialogue is so bland it makes what you're watching boring. The scene I was speaking of before is a torture scene with Chevy Chase. He is brilliant in this situation, and the dialogue is so funny. I don't want to give anything away, but this scene is worth a watch, even if you check it out on YouTube. There is a scene where the two need to test how they react to excessive G-Force and it's fantastic. Unfortunately, throughout the rest of the movie, there was only one other scene where I laughed and that was from Chevy Chase and I will discuss that later. After they are shipped off to their first deployment in Pakistan, they soon find out that they're the decoys in this plan. It happens so quick, and they really don't seem to care. It was a weird scenario. They just find out and are like "okay, we're going home", and I was sitting on the couch thinking to myself, "seriously?". Overall, if you like Chevy Chase or Dan Aykroyd I still can't recommend this one, just for the sake of my own integrity. It was a very disappointing experience. 2/5
