Submission Reviews

Submission keeps the audience engaged with a slight but well-told story, it just might leave you wanting a little bit more. It’s still a respectable film on its own but rarely digs deep enough into this complex issue to have anything surprising to say.

| Original Score: 6/10 | May 19, 2022

For its intelligence and clear-eyed approach to things, Submission is worth viewing.

Levine's script misses the opportunity to get in the ring and wrestle with the messy place occupied by consensual but regrettable sex.

| Jun 17, 2019

Tucci and company make the film compelling, and although we know where things are headed, the occasional detour here and there makes for an interesting journey.

| Original Score: B+ | Aug 14, 2018

There should be more outrage, more compassion, more something - yet the film can't capitalize on its hot-button premise.

| Jul 13, 2018

Submission lacks the insight and perspective to become a movie that represents "now." When the current cultural, political, and social climates are especially contentious, perhaps we need a movie that will address these issues head-on.

Submission is a fine film held back by a script full of convenient plot developments and flimsy writing; a cautionary tale for the consequences of men thinking with their junk too much

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 21, 2018

A seriously considered film brimming with ideas worth examining.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 20, 2018

...viewers will most likely overlook the strong performances by stars Stanley Tucci and Addison Timlin and instead focus on the wasted opportunity to say something important about this moment in our time.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 19, 2018

Submission might make itself useful as a mandatory instructional video for male professors; a "Scared Straight" for campus PhD's thinking about messing with nubile co-eds.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 16, 2018

Frustrating but sincere and well acted, especially by Tucci, who embodies a middle-aged man in transition, "Submission" explores well the risk associated with stepping out of one's comfort zone and shaking free from the stranglehold of mediocrity.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 14, 2018

In the moment of #MeToo and #TimesUp, this tale of the relationship between an older male professor and his young female student is howlingly out of step and outrageously tone deaf. And that's on top of its tedious clichs.

| Original Score: .5/5 | Mar 14, 2018

Throughout, this charge, Angela's lie, and Ted's complicitness are treated as little more than a student contesting her grades. And for this, Submission gets an F.

[Addison] Timlin, to her credit, is very good in a role that requires her to range from dithering insecurity to steely opportunist. Likewise, Sedgwick is forced to play an implausibly twinkly, loving spouse, only to turn gorgon in her last scene.

| Mar 9, 2018

... a dim-witted film that reinforces insulting male and female stereotypes as it follows a veteran college writing professor, navely malleable and easily seduced by an attractive, ambitious, duplicitous female student.

| Mar 9, 2018

Submission's uninspiring discourse feels like Ted's follow-up book: unfinished and disappointing.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 9, 2018

Acting is a precise craft but also a mysterious alchemy, and when you've gotten as good as Tucci has, a seamless performance like this can transform a so-so movie into a pleasure.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 9, 2018

Tucci and Timlin are both quite good in their roles, and writer-director Richard Levine (adapting Francine Prose's 2000 novel "Blue Angel") does an excellent job of slowly escalating the pair's relationship.

| Original Score: B- | Mar 9, 2018

It doesn't quite work, and that Submission fails the Bechdel Test hard probably goes without saying.

| Mar 8, 2018

I couldn't help but enjoy much of its tone, as well as the ebb and flow of the performances, even if I was troubled by the enigma of Angela.
