Sundown Reviews

Mar 26, 2025

Meh, I don't mind slow or mundane movies, but this movie had almost nothing interesting going on it for me to enjoy it. Characters were meh, story was meh, scenes for meh, pretty much the only highlight was the setting.

Not what I was expecting at all, not too many moving parts in this movie, clever. Less is more with this movie. Definitely have to watch it through, it resolves the main character who may have seemed a little uncomfortable from the beginning.

In several of Tim Roth's recent appearances you feel like sticking a pin up his backside to see if he is capable of actual communication at any level - even a yelp. And this is no exception. (With the exception of Reservoir Dogs - where you wish he'd shut up and die already!!). It really is most frustrating - okay, the audience is supposed to 'feel' everything he is going through, but film media does have to include a modicum of actually EXPRESSED feelings. By the by, it would seem to me far more reasonable that he was holiday with his wife and children, rather than his sister and her children. That would explain the hatred the children felt for the father who had abandoned them and their mother. Anyway, having said all that, it is worth seeing.

Tim Roth:......... .......

Odd and slow pacing, but overall good movie Tim Roth was perfect for the role.

Closest thing to legal euthanasia, imagine Sylvia Plath wrote the hangover and you directed it, was of LIFE

Little plot or dialogue, but there the direction and acting -- especially Mr. Roth -- somehow engages you. That said, the plot twist in the final quarter feels like too easy a way out, and it delegitimizes much of what you have seen previously. Otherwise, the dark ending fits, even if it is existentially difficult to watch/process, that honest pain of the human condition does resonate.

I watch a ton of movies and overall this was pretty good. In the beginning I was not sure if the lady he was with was his wife or sister? Was I the only one? Even after the mom died I still was not sure if he was cheating on her with the new gal he met on the island. Then when she came back to have him sign the legal papers I was like oh that is his sister. I give this movie a C+, glad I watched it.

So, so slow. You keep waiting for something to happen (as the film promises), but it never does. Then it just ends. I'm sure this will be spun as "Artistic" by the producer, but it was just awful. A waste of an hour and a half.

Fantastic film! Only a person, who watched someone die can understand this loneliness, this complete indifference to last transitional housing, this slow disappearance. Will watch more by this director.

Am I the only one who thought they were husband and wife? Had to rewatch it to see if I missed that somewhere but nope, it's never mentioned.

Sundown – A Slow Burn While not a dedicated fan of Tim Roth, he acquits himself rather well in the serious but ambiguous role of a ‘tourist' in Acapulco, behaving very strangely. But, is it ever really right for a writer/director (Michel Franco) to deliberately keep vital details about their story and its characters from the audience - in order to make the main theme and situations more difficult to fathom? This is one of those cases where we are forced to wonder what's driving the central characters - while being kept out of the vital loop to understand their motivations and actions. At times this device can add a mysterious element to certain stories but this one is just too meanderingly bland to qualify as a mystery per se. Still, the makers expect us to have the patience to stay with it long enough to fill in the missing pieces. Too many people read about the movies they choose to see before watching, then think they are superior for ‘working it out', but for others who like to go in cold and let the story unfold in its own time, it's another matter. Minimalist works such as this require more detail to allow us to connect the more outlandish sections (and there are several here) to where the story is heading. While at times interesting and rather tragic, it's just as well this has a shortish runtime as any more would have killed it entirely. The ending doesn't fully deliver a complete understanding of the many peculiar prior actions, and judging from the bulk of reviews, this may not be adequate closure for many to accept, and understandably so.

Very timely movie for me. I'm 62 and retired. I've watched normal life destroyed by the insanity of Covid measures. In 6 weeks, I'm giving all my possessions away, and living the rest of my life in a furnished rental on the beach in a Mexico beach town. I'd give Sundown 10 stars if I could.

Sundown is the epitome of a film where ostensibly not much happens and yet each scene is somehow compelling and gripping. It's a small drama but one that emits many emotions and feelings. British man Neil and his sister Alice are holidaying at a resort in Acapulco. They are with Alice's two teenage children. Neil is indifferent to all the lavish trappings and when an emergency means they need to return home he can't leave as his passport is lost. The focus is then for most of the film on Neil leading a very laidback life in a hotel in Acapulco, where he spends his days drinking beer and sitting on the beach. He also meets a local woman and starts a relationship. Even though nothing much happens in this period of the film it's all quite compelling. It's a very internal film and Tim Roth is excellent as Neil, conveying much with very little effort. The film does explode into life in the final third, making for a film that is multi layered and indeed high quality.

Overall, this is a heavy drama film which I found quite unexpected.  It's also a film that feels mysterious as it tells its story at a slow pace with intense moments of both tension and heartbreak.  While the pace is slow, I was still highly engaged and invested, but I can't deny the third act loses some momentum and even has portions that seem complex and abrupt.  Visually, this film doesn't disappoint; everything on-screen is a wonderful experience.  The same can be said about actor Tim Roth who also delivers something new in his career.

stagnant and plotless. Roth gives a solid performance, but you won't want to spend any time with his dull unlikable character.

Tedious. Beyond low key. It was hard, no impossible to empathize with the main character and as an entertainment it was not.

This film is rather niche, I'd say. In one way I'm left thinking it was really a bit too directionless and I feel a little cheated of my time but in another way (there is something near the very end that adds a bit of context) its surprisingly poignant. Suffice to say, this film won't be enjoyed by, or appeal to, all. The main character, played by Tim Roth, is clearly a very quiet and distant person and its hard to understand or relate to him for the most part. It's pretty unclear what's going on but it's made clear towards the end, perhaps what the wider picture may be. I won't say anymore so as not to provide unnecessary spoilers. It's a pretty subtle film for the most part - definitely not an action thriller, like other films Tim has been in. I can't quite decide how I feel about this one. I think it is somewhat clever but I do think that people looking for quick hit type of a film may well get bored or depressed and stop watching before the end, where things become more clear. I'll say no more. This is quite an indie watch, so I don't think it suits everyone, hence I wouldn't actively recommend it as such, no.

Sundown is a sharp narrative of many a pettiness of man. Movie represents a wide array of individuals often debatable and thought provoking. The inside outsider toughest role millions of us mastering at present is performed with persistence by Tim Roth. Story portrays the prejudices, belittling, despair and eventual nothingness exceptionally. The contrasting imagery pictures the screaming thoughts and the endless void of a mind that slowly descends into an eternal horizon.

Complete waste of time. Movie is about nothing, pretending to be about something. Worst part is that they tell you at the end why the main character is acting weird all movie long. He has a brain tumor. WOW! Puts the whole thing in perspective! If this was a script from a 10 year old kid you'd still tell him to come up with something better. I've seen movies before that pretend to be intellectual by keeping you in the dark about the plot, but at least they had the decency to keep you in the dark. Pretentious, boring, dull acting and unrealistic. The good news is that they put every piece of dialogue and action that is in the movie in the trailer as well. So you can watch the trailer and you won't have to watch all the boring stuff. Saves you 1 hour and 20 minutes of pure boredom.
