Melissa M Anthony Hickox made some of the best horror comedies in the '80s & '90s. Hickox is the director & screenwriter of this movie. John Burgess is the other screenwriter. Before there was American Vampires by Stephen King. There was the Vampire Western Sundown The Vampire In Retreat. This movie is a comedy, western, horror film. It's vampy & beyond LOL. This movie has some of the best campy one-liners of all time. In the film David takes his family to what he thinks is going to be a small quiet town. To help fix a plasma plant for a man named Jozek Mardulak. What David doesn't realize is it's manufacturing bottled blood & Mardulak is a vampire. There is tension growing in Purgatory. Mardulak wants a peaceful existence for his modern-day vampires. Where is Jefferson wants to do things the Nosferatu way. Jefferson's vamps led by a vicious vampire named Shane who's vamping over David's wife Sarah find a way to create a weapon that can kill his vampire foes that uses wooden bullets. The movie is highly imaginative & wildly creative. The movie Stars Deborah Foreman, Dana Ashbrook, David Carradine, John Ireland, M Emmett Walsh, Maxwell Caulfield And the King of Camp Bruce Campbell. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review derek w Takes that formula that made later Hammer movies popular adds a portion of humour , the result is at times cheesy or other times suspenseful and despite the plot going for a bit of a wander midstream (which could be an editing thing) it is a satisfying watch . Not hardcore vampire but if you like the genre it does just about work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review David W A fun light horror, comedy, western mash-up with some good gags and a cast who seem to be really enjoying themselves. Screen legends Bruce Campbell and David Carradine are both on fine form and put in enjoyable turns. The director keeps the script moving along with both pace and an eye for comedy. I very much enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone who fancies a likeably daft vampire movie that doesn't take itself at all seriously and thankfully doesn't have the usual teen angst. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/22 Full Review Audience Member Slightly camp with its delivery, this perfectly sets up the fact it's a comedy - especially as its Vampires living in one of the sunniest climates in the world! It has a b-movie quality to it though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A wacky vampire tale. One of, if not the first time I saw things like wooden bullets and using synthetic blood and suntan lotion to be out in the sun. Plus Bruce Campbell and David Carradine, how can you go wrong? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as funny as the premise might suggest. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
