Swimming Pool Reviews

Apr 16, 2025

Needing to recharge her batteries, crime novelist Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) heads off to her publisher’s French villa for some rest and relaxation. However, when the publisher’s daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) unexpectedly shows up, things take a sudden turn. Francois Ozon’s Swimming Pool initially seems to follow the path of what appears to be a character study of an artist’s inner struggles, but soon turns into an emotionally charged psychosexual thriller…or does it? The unexpected (and somewhat confusing) twist at the end feels like it just convolutes things, but Swimming Pool remains a stylish movie that never sacrifices entertainment value for art. And Rampling, as always, is excellent.

Stylish, erotic drama that has two amazing lead actresses in Charlotte Rampling & Ludvine Sagnier, great cinematography, an extremely well written script & the usual directorial finesse of Froncois Ozon. Lots of nudity & sex scenes, so not for the easily offended & you even get a Charles Dance cameo for good measure. Reviewed from a US import DVD so not sure if the UK version is edited.

first of all how is this movie has above average rating!. the story is just plain and not interesting the characters are dull, i felt like im watching a teenage film from Netflix, i was patient and hoped the movie would get better at the end but i couldn't wait i was getting bored of this mainly fillers and skipped forward and i am very thankful i did because the ending was really dumb. i regret i wasted my time watching this terrible movie, so my final score is 1/10 strongly not recommended, one of the worst movies I've watched this year.

This mysterious and sensual thriller with a pleasantly slow pace will keep you captivated from beginning till end leaving you confused about what was fiction and what was reality.

Feels like an artsy erotica without any other point, especially due to the controversial ending

It never reveals more than it wants to at any time. The ending comes as a surprise, but actually is totally in step with the rest of the movie. Outstanding film.

Beautiful movie. Dramatic and slow burn. Character study.

Two women: A successful, self-absorbed, middle aged mystery writer from England, and a spoiled, rich, young female brat from France. The ensuing mystery might have been somewhat interesting if we liked either of the characters, but they're both so annoying that I didn't give a damn what happened to them. Typical French film with lots of nudity. Who cares?

Not knowing what to expect I was mostly confused. I didnt expect it to take the turn that it took. Very slow. I kept waiting for something to happen. Young naked women are always a plus so I cant really complain.

Great plot and screenplay all mixed in with excellent acting to make one great movie.

I love the star actress & found it very intriguing. I definitely did NOT expect what the ending was, and I love that! I love movies like this. I would totally recommend it.

A film that's stuck with me for 17 yrs

Intriguing, but took a long time to get to the "thriller" part of the story and then it ended too quickly from there.

Psychological thriller and character study. Not completely successful blurring of fantasy and reality, but fairly intriguing for what it could have been.

She's juicy, fun and confusing. It's a win in my book.

Clever, psychologically sharp, masterfully acted, unnerving and... beautiful.

A fantastic thriller about a anonymity-seeking crime novelist from Britain who seeks an end to her writer's' block in her publisher's villa in France, only to find herself holed up with his French daughter whose promiscuity, drug use, and sarcasm at first frustrate the writer, then provide inspiration for her. This film has a great atmosphere which is erotic, philosophical, and shot through with a kind of teenage angst coming from both the young daughter and the much older writer who appears to be involved in some way with her publisher. It's full of striking imagery and vivid characterization, providing a new twist on what you might expect to find in a European villa.

After seeing the Swimming Pool, I wanted to quit my job, move to France and look for Julie!! An interesting story set in the beautiful French country side with a surprise ending. Which story are we watching?!

Though Charlotte Rampling is brilliant, as usual, I felt this movie is somehow incomplete. What's missing?
