Critics Consensus

Hampered by toothless PG-13 action sequences, incoherent direction, and a hackneyed plot, Taken 3 serves as a clear signal that it's well past time to retire this franchise.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Forest Whitaker turns in one of his sleepiest performances; no one else seems to be trying very hard either, yet director Olivier Megaton delivers some good chases, fist fights, and shots of Neeson looking glum. Jan 16, 2015 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland A movie that thinks the way to earn our knuckle-biting is to be as dull as hell for 35 minutes, then send a giant shipping container hurtling along the interstate. But you yawn through that, too. Jan 16, 2015 Full Review Philippa Hawker The Age (Australia) There's something sluggishly formulaic about the rollout of smackdowns, chase scenes and general mayhem involving wrecked cars. And a plot point involving warm bagels is downright ludicrous. Robbie Rob Liam Neeson rocks. Another typical Taken movie......with lots of action, good effects, and revenge killing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review Michelle'sMovieMoment! Liam Neeson ALWAYS delivers!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/22 Full Review Petros T Apparently, Liam Neeson's salary was almost half the budget, and frankly I don't see any other reason to make this other than the money. He seems rather bored, and how couldn't he be when both the plot and the action are so formulaic? Forest Whitaker is pretty good, and the little character detail with the rubber band was a nice touch. Drinking game suggestion: take a shot whenever Mills saves himself or his daughter by doing something that in the real world would have endangered them even more. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Tanner B Acting is sub par. I feel like I don’t want to watch a Liam Neeson movie ever again. Soundtrack is poorly timed and often unnecessary. It just sucks Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Blu B Wow...The first 45 minutes or so is actually kind of ok with setting things up. It seems like it's another The Fugitive/Hitchcock wrong man accused plot for better or for worse. Not sure why it's called "Taken" though. You can still have a sequel without the 3. But regardless....nothing prepares you for the next hour of just incoherent, insanely fast, convuluted beyond belief plot involving Russians, betrayals of friends we've seen and never seen before but the film acts like we know all these people and that's only from the parts I could decipher.I'm sure there is a triple cross in there somewhere too because I had genuinely no idea what in the right mind was going on. And I swear I paid attention the whole way. It just bombards you with tons of action, shotouts, car chases, and than plot expose twists moments for minor repreives before going back to the nonsense. The editing is terrible, horrific pacing, generic music, and subpar cinematography and direction. It just isn't clear at all what is happening in the second half. The acting is alright I guess just watching Nesson kill dudes and beat them up but it's stronger in the first half when there's actual attempts at normal human interactions. The whole ppregnancy thing is completely pointless too. Shame they killed Famke because she is probably the best thing like in the pervious. Skip This. Terrible end to the trilogy. Completely unneeded and worst one by two miles at least. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/21/25 Full Review Ralph R Taken 3 tries to bring a fresh angle to the franchise, shifting from the usual "rescue mission" to a fugitive-style thriller, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. The plot feels weaker compared to the first two, relying on predictable twists and a lack of real tension. The script struggles to connect the story in a meaningful way, making it feel more like an unnecessary sequel rather than a proper conclusion. The directing leans heavily on fast cuts and shaky action sequences, which at times make the movie feel more chaotic than intense. Some moments work, but others feel like they’re just going through the motions. Liam Neeson still delivers a solid performance, carrying the movie with his usual presence, but the supporting cast doesn’t add much to elevate the film. The cinematography is serviceable but doesn’t stand out, with action scenes suffering from over-editing that makes it hard to follow. The score is decent but doesn’t bring anything memorable to the experience. While there are some enjoyable moments, the movie lacks the tight execution of the first Taken and ends up feeling like a forgettable entry in the trilogy. Watchable, but nothing special.
