The Aeronauts Reviews

Feb 25, 2025

What an absolutely lovely movie. It kept me glued for the whole duration. The chemistry between the two leads make this movie a magical one to watch and one that shouldn't be missed.

Tom Harper’s The Aeronauts offers a glimpse into the daring early efforts to explore the atmosphere and understand weather patterns. While the plot centers on meteorologist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) and fictional balloonist Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones), the film’s true focus is nature's raw, uncontrollable power and humanity’s attempts to study it. The depiction of atmospheric hazards is gripping and feels authentic, even as it occasionally stretches historical accuracy. As Glaisher and Wren ascend in their hot air balloon, they face intense turbulence, freezing temperatures, and the suffocating effects of oxygen deprivation. These challenges are portrayed with harrowing intensity, showcasing the genuine risks faced by 19th-century scientists. However, the film’s claim of reaching over 37,000 feet—a height that would have been nearly impossible with the technology of the time—leans more into cinematic spectacle than strict realism. What stands out most is the characters’ responses to these dangers. Glaisher’s relentless drive to gather data reflects the spirit of scientific discovery, even when personal safety is at stake. Meanwhile, Wren’s resourcefulness and calm under pressure serve as a reminder of the importance of preparation and quick thinking in the face of the unknown. Together, they embody the balance between ambition and respect for nature’s immense power. Despite its dramatizations, The Aeronauts delivers a powerful message about humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It’s a thrilling adventure and a poignant reminder of the courage and ingenuity required to advance our understanding of the environment.

My compliments go mainly to the art and set design of this film. Well done, visually. I'm reluctant to believe that any human would be able to sustain adequate brain function at an altitude of 37,000 feet for more than 5 minutes (maximum)?? without oxygen supply. Then again, I wasn't there so I am not at liberty to say. But we DO know that aircraft have crashed after the depressurization of the cabin at an altitude of 33,000 feet, at which point humans are unlikely to stay COMPLETELY conscious for more than 6 minutes before hypoxia sets in and clouds your basic judgment and bodily functions. Anyway, this was still a Hollywood movie and what do I know?!

Un drama de época, con excelente fotografía y efectos especiales que ayudan a comprender la ciencia meteorológica… Inspirada en hechos reales; combinación entre emoción y nostalgia.

OK THAT WAS VERY GOOD ACTUALLY

Don't let a lot of facts get in the way of a good story..........artistic license is one thing, but this is a little much, I'm sorry. Hard to take seriously. Good for young kids I guess.

A complete lie of the actual history. Such a shame because this is a cool story.

This is quite sentimental but I enjoyed it overall. It's perhaps a little dull at times but the story and the characters intrigued me even if their only very loosely based on fact. There's some lovely cinematography and the period costumes (where they feature - not all the time) are nice. Understandably, there's a fair bit of shaky camerawork, which may frustrate you and Eddie's acting is a little cheesy at times but I liked the themes and the sentiment. It reminded me slightly of 'Around the World in 80 days with Willy Fogg', though its a shame there weren't more scenes showing the balloonists location from the ground - scenes showing the balloon in the sky with little but white clouds to be seen isn't greatly awe inspiring as such, though the thought of being in either balloonists shoes is a somewhat daunting one, right enough. Amelia Wren seemed a pretty admirable character, as a scientist or women explorer of her time. I like that she's rightfully mentioned and complimented towards the end of the film, although I'd have liked it if more info. about the true story were shown on screen just before the credits. Suffice to say, it's by no means perfect but its certainly alright.

Great movie, may not be an ideal movie for lovers of authenticity but if you are a person who loves to be immersed in fairy tale worlds and adventures you will definitely have a great time with this movie. The visuals, words and a bunch of great background music are the highlight of the movie

What a visual spectacle. One of the most visually stunning films that I've seen in a very long time!

Great visualization of the event

I really enjoyed this. There's a lot that makes it work - chiefly the technical excellence in almost every department that make for some of the most vertiginous scenes you're ever likely to see, and the palpable chemistry between Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. They're both excellent in their lead roles. The occasional cuts to brief flashbacks and activity on the ground gives context but is perhaps a bit clumsy; but overall this is a really enjoyable film.

Period piece that makes effective use of tension from multiple sources. Good acting and good pacing.

I enjoyed this one and the story it told about the adventure of 2 people setting off in a hot-air balloon in the 1860's to set a new world altitude record. I also enjoyed how it filled in the back story of each character as the movie progressed and each had to battle the naysayers to get to where they were. I know it was historically based on real people as James Glaisher lived during this time period and Sophie Blanchard who lived a few decades earlier and died in a balloon crash at age 41 in Paris.

I find both Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne to be good actors. This was another example of that. I enjoyed watching.

The Aeronauts is a thrilling adventure ride (for real!)), boosted by incredible visuals and the continuing chemistry between the leads. Some have expressed dismay that one of the real life character's genders was flipped, but I suspect these are the same viewers who wouldn't enjoy musicals like Hamilton or any of Quentin Tarantino's reimagined retellings of history. The truth is that plenty of female aeronauts really did exist in the 19th century, so it's not like this is some wild stretch of the imagination. Another search revealed that the terrors and mishaps depicted in the film never actually happened to the real aeronauts upon whom the film is based...certainly not all in one flight. But many films condense historical facts to create a narrative while staying true to the overall achievement of the original events. It's called entertainment, ya know? Just enjoy it for what it is, and feel free to watch with the kids. Well worth the view!

This Amazon Prime movie was really good. Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. This true story about the scientist and balloon pilot that traveled nearly seven miles high in the sky and made many discoveries about the sky was dramatic, inspirational, and terrifying. It's about changing the world and overcoming every obstacle. If you're an Amazon Prime member, you should watch this movie sometime. It's a must see.
