Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... it wreaks of self-important pseudo-commentary that is more hollow and garishly humorous than it cares to admit. Rated: D Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com While The Big Short is hardly uplifting, it still manages to tell a rambunctiously funny tale that's as informative as it is entertaining, humor walking hand-in-hand with tragedy to ultimately craft a comedy that's impossible to dismiss. Rated: 3/4 Aug 16, 2016 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Adam McKay's The Big Short plays like an elaborate con, albeit one that uses its powers for good. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 12, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Headlined by a star-studded cast, this legitimate must-see film tip-toes audaciously between biting satire and topical cautionary tale. You won't know whether to be pissed or be entertained and that's a powerful quality to pull off. Aug 27, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Trying to keep up with all of the fast market talk and financial blather wore me down. And there’s so much emphasis on it that the movie comes off as overstuffed and missing the human element which would have given it a more powerful punch. Audience Member “If it keeps on raining, the levee’s gonna break”…. Don’t know if I ever heard a more appropriate song to describe exactly what was happening at that moment in time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/25 Full Review Aditya S It's a thoroughly entertaining film. Well written dialogue, amazing performances, comedy that breaks you up and frequent fourth wall breaks. And the best thing is that the film never abandons its topic and makes us understand it as well as we can. I mean, who won't listen to Margot Robbie in a Bubble Bath? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Kyle C Equal parts informative and entertaining, The Big Short is a surprisingly funny, yet depressing exploration of the events leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. It’s got a wild cast consisting of solid performances from Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Marisa Tomei, and many others. The weird thing is that most of the characters don’t actually share a scene at any point throughout the movie. Maybe this was budgetary or maybe it was an organic result of the story being told, but it does lead to the movie feeling a little less cohesive and a little more random. The filmmakers used some pretty creative techniques, like having celebrities explain them as themselves or introducing some ridiculous metaphors, to take the dry and complex explanations of financial concepts and make them not only easy to digest but also quite entertaining. It was also nice when the film would call itself out for embellishing details for the sake of Hollywood. Overall, it’s not the tightest picture I’ve seen, but it’s fun and sheds a nice light on the crooks behind the worst financial crisis in our lifetimes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Daniel J Engaging, funny, and explains an important topic and event. The way the different stories, personalities, and concepts are woven together is great. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review alan g Again hokeywood makes heroes out of criminals. Tgese miscreants almost brought the complete financial collapse of the US economy. Steve Cartfulofshit still can't act. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
