The Call Reviews

Feb 15, 2025

This movie had a good twist of what Hell would look like. No fire No Brimstone but the worst thing you ever done and living it over and over. The acting was amazing but I will say up until the ending had me on the edge of my seat. When making a great horror/thriller the ending has to be just as good unfortunately this was not a win.

I love Lin and Tobin, but this movie was very bad (not their fault).

There are two reasons to watch this, and no reasons to watch it again. The 80's retro vibe worked for awhile and the setup was okay, the execution was not okay and the 80's retro vibe disappeared as it all became things just happening without any focus or direction and with a missing conclusion without resolution of any kind.

Lin Shaye and Tobin Bell are amazing at their talent! I love watching them both! Great movie!!

I really wanted to like 'The Call' a lot more than I did when I found it had horror stalwarts Lin Shaye and Tobin Bell on the cast list. However, it just felt too long for its own good and nothing much happened. It's set in 1987. Why? No idea, besides some 'period' costumes early on in the film, there's no real reason why this couldn't be set in present day. Early on, every 80s cliche seems to be rolled out, from 'Adam Ant' style costumes to playing Pacman at the arcade. Then it all takes a back seat as the four main teenage characters (most of which look a lot older than the story would have us believe!) leave the cheapest looking set which passes for a carnival and go visit an old couple of 'play pranks' on them. Unfortunately, this leads to a death and a spooky encounter a few days later. I'm trying to be as vague as I can for fear of spoilers, but you don't get as much Lin Shaye as would have elevated the film more. Tobin Bell does his best to be creepy - and he is - but his scenes are the first to just drag on before the 'meat' of the story gets going. Then we're treated to four similar tales of horror - one per character - which are all preluded by very long drawn out scenes and basically much re-treads of each other and then it basically ends. I understand the reason why the film is called 'The Call,' but I'm sure they could have come up with a better - less generic - title. It's almost an hour before the 'horror' of this film gets going and, when it does,' it's not an awful lot that you haven't seen before. All in all, 'The Call' is okay, but not half as good as making a tighter-scripted film which utilised the considerable talents of Shaye and Bell. It's got some nice, stylish touches here and there - like the edits nearer the beginning of the movie - but apart from that and the two elder statesmen of horror, it hasn't got as much going for it as it could have.

Some decent acting, some interesting plot lines, but not very compelling. It's decent if you are looking for a basic horror movie, but doesn't offer much more than that.

can't be more dumb... makes no sense people would grow up and still be afraid of what they were afraid of when they were young... if i had a chance to go back i would beat up those who beat me before... especially those who were abused they would seek revenge rather than be afraid again... makes no sense to pick up the phone when you already know its a trap. what is extremely ridiculous is to be afraid of cops when the lady clearly commited suicide... she is dumb enough to choose to suicide, can't blame on nobody. To Tobin and Shaye... its ok to age and be lack of resources.. take a break.... , but your reputation should surpass your greed to make movies. you ruined your own reputation as actor/actress doing this movie.

I guess on paper 2020's 'The Call' may have looked like it could be a cohesive horror film. Throw in 'Saw's' Tobin Bell and surely this'll work? Wrong! SYNOPSIS: 'In the fall of 1987, a group of small-town friends must survive the night in the home of a sinister couple after a tragic accident brings them to the couple's door.' There are some interesting and scary nightmare sequences within this film, but not even the horror royalty of Bell and Lin Shaye, can stop this film being a mediocre mess of a film. Weak storytelling, weak performances and weak effects mean this is a film you can miss without any sort of guilt. Totally bland and forgettable. 4/10

An old woman commits suicide after being tormented for years by a group of teens. The husband offers $100,000 to each one of the teens in case they make a phone call to his deceased wife. The group of friends enter a realm where they must face their inner demons. "The Call" pays homage to the 80's horror movies and it stuns with its visuals. However, the narrative does not offer a satisfying experience as it is not truly scary or intriguing.

This movie is made like an old 80s B movie with half cringy acting but it has some really cool scary scenes. It's fun!

Aug 3, 2023

Clunky editing, bad script, bad sound design, story doesn't make sense, bad Directing. Cinematography ok, set design good, acting ok.

Jul 22, 2023

The ending was rushed and everyone died. Nobody survived. We do not know what happens in the real world after all the main characters die. There is no sort of closure. Although, the movie was pretty good before the ending. It had so much potential to be great. Especially with some of the legendary actors casted.

Having Shaye and Bell together on screen for the first time combines both powerhouses from the Saw and Insidious franchises, and although their scenes together are admittedly short, the fact that both legacy actors received top billing is probably reason enough to dial up this surprisingly dark revenge tale.

bad acting and just not that scary

Mar 4, 2022

Starts fine for a scary movie, but the second and third act are non sense, boring and predictible.

Dec 19, 2021

Clearly heavily influenced by a nightmare on elm street right down to the similar yet legally distinct soundtrack. Acting is passable except for Tobin bell who as always kills it. The plot is unique if slightly weak ,but interesting. The characters are ok but very one dimensional and not at all memorable. Where the film fails is the scares, which aren't really there. They try but nothing they do really works.

Dec 15, 2021

Starts out sorta promising, but completely falls apart once the events start to take place. What could have been a unique concept, turns into a poorly executed "horror house" type film. Just bad.

way better than i expected.

I want to just start by saying this movie had so much potential. Although very predictable I felt it had good build up and story telling aspects. Ending left so much more to be desired. I feel they could have gone so many other directions than they did with the ending but they just wrapped it up in the lamest way possible.

Horrible. If you're into scary movies whatsoever, do yourself a favor and skip this one. This is a good movie for 12 year olds.
