Critics Consensus

A rare film that surpasses the quality of its source novel, this Devil is a witty expose of New York's fashion scene, with Meryl Streep in top form and Anne Hathaway more than holding her own.

Deborah Ross The Spectator It's Meryl's movie, everyone says, and in a way it is. She gives a furiously funny performance as a furiously nasty bit of work... But, as I said earlier, scenes without her suffer horribly. Aug 22, 2018 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader An agreeably shallow comedy. May 27, 2008 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Makes one pine for any comparable '50s working-girl comedy (or, for that matter, 1988's Working Girl). Rated: C Jan 11, 2007 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies When you think of the final years of Fox before the Disney acquisition, The Devil Wears Prada is one of the standout films--they don't make them like they used to. Rated: 5/5 Jun 30, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com If looks can truly kill, Meryl Streep's Miranda may very well be the fashion industry's most notorious serial killer. Rated: 3.0/4.0 Sep 6, 2020 Full Review Leigh Paatsch Herald Sun (Australia) This one goes out to anyone suffering the whims of a tyrannical employer. For you, this will be so much more than a fun, fashion-conscious comedy. It will be therapy. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 11, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

S S The Devil Wears Prada totally surprised me. I’m not really into fashion, but this movie made me appreciate it in a way I never expected — both as an art form and as an industry that influences way more than just style. The storyline was super engaging and kept me hooked the whole time. And as much as it pains me to admit it… I actually ended up liking Miranda Priestly. Her arrogance was brutal, but there was something oddly admirable about her power and presence. My only gripe is that it felt like the movie ended too soon — I would’ve loved to see a bit more closure between Andy and Miranda. That final smirk was subtle (and probably her version of a big gesture), but a more definitive "happy ending" would've made it feel more complete. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Kylie Q My comfort movie!! I love everything about this movie. From the music, to the transition scenes, to the dialogues, to Meryl Streep's performance, all the way to the cute dumb look the boyfriend gets on his face. I have not one bad thing to say about this movie. If I could only watch one movie for the rest of my life, this would be it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Audience Member Unique movie that kept me interested, but didn't get me more than a few laughs here and there Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Samuel P Anyone who didn't give this 5 stars is clinically insane. Fantastic acting, compelling romance, hilarious moments, and heart-wrenching scenes. No cheesy moments, nothing derivative, and no plot holes. 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Colette P Well acted, well paced, and an overall clever commentary on the ever relevant topic of corporate greed. The Devil Wears Prada is one of those films that takes an unbiased look at the pros and cons of its selected subject matter, in this case, the fashion world. It looks at both of the polar opposite opinions of the industry and makes a point to acknowledge all its great and ugly. Each character is affected by the fashion industry in entirely different ways making for a cast of diverse and engaging characters. The movie wastes no time with this, giving us endless scenes of memorable dialogue and witty awkwardness. It knows the power it’s cast has to carry scenes and the film celebrates that wholeheartedly. For better or worse, this movie’s commentary is timeless. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Ishara L Well, I was certainly entertained! Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway are really good and have great chemistry together in these roles. Emily Blunt was also really great. It's not the greatest but it's a great story about someone being pulled between two important things in her life and having to make a choice between them. I couldn't do what Andrea's character could do, would have walked away a LOT earlier. But I understand the want to have it and I love that the 'shortcut' she tries eventually bites her in the ass.
