The Good Liar Reviews
An outstanding cast and a great story. I had to watch it again in the same week. An unpredictable story line that is engaging and well paced. The best movie I have seen in a while.
Here’s an exciting back story of two Agents who colluded over lunch in a Mayfair restaurant. Each instantly identifying that they could demand a substantial fee for their clients McKellen and Mirren in order to give this unbelievable Turkey of a film some box office interest…because it was never going to fly without them! Full marks for all of them and capitalising on the opportunity. They have more than enough prestige not to have this film held against them, - but the film and what passes for a plot! Absolutely implausible from its concept right through to the end. Simplistic to the point of insulting the viewers intelligence.
Truly awful (apart from the cast, who manage to be amazing despite the turkey they are dealing with). Totally obvious main plot arc, wooden dialogue. Makes me think the producers of a Neighbours have been given these star actors for a couple of days.... Just goes to show that even the best actors have a price: netflix must really be paying big money
Made me reflect on money being the root of all evil..how it poisons relationships...what a credible liar...what greed and deception brilliantly acted..... great to see the wheel of justice turn in the end... gripping...
The movie starts off strong, with great acting and a compelling plot that keeps you hooked. However, by the end, it feels like the filmmakers take the easy way out by spoon-feeding the entire plot and its reasons. Instead of letting the audience piece things together, they explain everything outright, making you wonder why you even bothered paying attention for the first two hours. It’s as if all the buildup loses its impact when the mystery is just handed to you.
The acting was really amazing! The story kept you guessing about the details but the outline was basic Nazi bad guys.
I watched this on DVD recently and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The acting is superb throughout, and a delight to watch. The plot is gripping and has plenty of twists and turns to maintain the viewer's attention. That said, I don't think it's quite as clever as the writer intended. When Betty's grandson Steven turned up unannounced during their vacation in Berlin I started to doubt Betty, and guessed a significant portion of the ending. I'm no super sleuth, so the story must have revealed more than the writer had intended, or I would never have worked it out. That said, it's still great fun to watch the full plot unfold at the end. It's also a very well made movie, which is pleasantly presented with attractive interesting scenes and a complementary soundtrack. It's very well paced so there is never a dull moment. All in all I found the movie very satisfyingly and have no hesitation recommending it.
The Film is wild journey between Roy (Ian McKellen) who is simply a con artist taking advantage of British widows and, Beth (Helen Mirren) who he wants to thieve for her fortune but doesn't turn out as he would have hoped.
In today's world of "WHO are you really out there in Cyberspace, makes this story line very topical. There are a ton of romance scammers out there lurking on the World Wide Web looking to "cat fish" well heeled lonely widows or divorcees. It's a warning to all would be lonely hearts about the perils of on line dating except that this one had a sting in the tail. All is not what it seems. The "lonely' widow is not some helpless uninformed hausfrau with a home in Suburbia. It was pay back time to redress a crime committed decades ago. We have 2 heavyweight Main leads in this riverting tale of lies and financial deceit. Neither actors missed a beat. A most entertaining movie and one not to be missed.
The first two thirds is an enjoyable conman crime caper, but the third act stretches credibility and the denouement beggars belief. Ultimately, the story as a whole is preposterous. Ian McKellan & Helen Mirren are as outstanding as you would expect, but Russell Tovey seems miscast and out of his depth in such august company.
Good performances all round but the twist at the end is quite unnecessary and detracts from what could have been a much cleverer resolution.
Mikey's Movie Review: Ther Good Liar (2019) A tour de force master class in acting. Helen Mirren & Ian Mckellen excell in a dangerous game of chance, deception and revenge... Mikey's Movie Rating: 3/4*
It is 2009 in London and Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) is on a online dating service searching for his next target. Roy is a professional con man and he has made a career of stealing fortunes from rich unexpected widows. He is a master of lies and deception and Roy now has his sights set on Betty McLeish, (Helen Mirren) a recently widowed millionaire. Roy sees Betty as a easy target, a simple swindle that will set him up for life. Oh but not this time. This time it is different and what should have been a easy mark, turns into a suspenseful cat and mouse game. "Its the game. Its the adrenaline rush" - Vincent Who is really who? Who is really playing who? This game escalates into a mysterious and deadly showdown that reminds me of a Alfred Hitchcock film. Oh I really like this movie. Lots of twist and unexpected turns in this one. A very clever story full of secrets, lies, and deception. "You know, it's very peculiar doing things you'd never imagined. Secrets between you, God, the devil, and the dead" - Betty Wow! this is truly a Master class of actors: Helen Mirren, Ian McKellen, Russell Tovey, and Jim Carter is amazing as Roy's business partner Vincent. Also on Prime and VUDU
An absolutely enjoyable, eventful, brain twisting movie with fantastic actors. Not the most exciting in history but certainly a great one!
Watchable but pales by comparison to Apt Pupil
One of the best revenge movies. I am a big fan of Dane Helen Mirren and she did not disappoint!
Really enjoyed this one. Lots of twists and turns and a satisfying ending.
