Critics Consensus

Mixing multiple genres, The Gorge makes for a surprisingly endearing romance until its action-thriller obligations steer proceedings back onto a more predictable path.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) Two rules: don't show me your monster and don't explain it, because whatever you say is going to be silly. They broke both rules. May 8, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) It's a tough balance to strike and I don't think the sci-fi part works as well as [the romance]. The two [actors] have a lot of chemistry and look great together, the film looks great, and the score is great. May 8, 2025 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News The special effects are quite good, but “The Gorge” doesn’t scale the goofy heights in a rollercoaster ride way that it thinks it does, stalling out with a hackneyed ending that makes you shrug your shoulders and want to move on to something better. Rated: 2/4 Mar 3, 2025 Full Review Dan Buffa Ramble On With Buffa (Substack) All in all, a solid action adventure that spins a new take on the forbidden romance setup. Levi taking the leap to go see a woman he just met does unleash chaos, but would you resist the urge to dive headfirst over a large canyon for love? Apr 26, 2025 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press Love in the time of Cordyceps. Rated: 3/5 Apr 5, 2025 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film The Gorge is essentially cut scenes from every World War II zombie video game you've ever seen. It has the same basic plotting, and is wholly derivative in its visuals and world building. Rated: C- Apr 4, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Dominic B The first half, where the relationship between the two main characters is established, is quite good. The second half, a substandard mix of Aliens and Stranger Things, is quite bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Mitch S Both those actors are amazing... and they DID do a fine job. I just think the issue lies with the story line its self and how it was written and directed. Some pretty ok action scenes but for the most part I was really disapointed with the creatures and how the gorge came about. The ending I thought was really stupid, knew it was going to happen the way it did. Everyone probably did. Very Cliché. I cant even say I'd really recommend it personally but who knows maybe you will love it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review pankaj c It's a must watch don't go for the score it's a 10/10 movie worth it it's such an amazing movie woooooh! Loved it #coming_from_an_indian Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Krzysztof P Let's start with the strong parts: the cast is great, the actors carry what is otherwise a pretty average movie that lacks bite in its final act. The visual effects are pretty great as are the vistas surrounding the titular gorge (filmed in Norway). The bad: plot is predictable and not without plot holes large enough to drive a jeep into - e.g. the petrol in any of the ww2 vehicles present in the gorge would long have evaporated by the time the events of the movie take place), jump scares aren't that scary (though YMMV - my skittish other half kept jumping whenever the obviously telegraphed monsters appeared) and, given this is meant to be a horror flic, it lacks bite. !Spoiler alert! The movie telegraphs that a weapon developped during WW2 got released during an earthquake causing humans and animals to mutate into part-plant (sometimes part bug) monstrosities with a 5 day time window being telegraphed for mutation to start showing. Both characters are in the fog causing this mutation, and even remark how they need to quarantine themselves afterwards to make sure they are mutation-free. Somewhat disappointingly, both manage to make it to the end of the story entirely untouched by their time in the gorge. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Audience Member too cheesy. The signs back and forth were too cutesy. The last half was better than the first half. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Audience Member It should be called the gouge because I tried gouging my eyes out through the whole movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
