It was like watching The Color of Purple all over again which I watched before watching The Help, excellent movies recommended by a friend, though The Color of Purple is a very old movie but equally great. In fact, it should be a real illness and exterminate all those who have it, considering it is something completely optional for that abominable creature that does not want to be cured. Exceptional performances by Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer (who deservedly earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress), among others. Tate Taylor managed to bring these wonderful women together in a direction that is as light/comic as possible but at the same time extremely serious. Based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett. Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Kevin P A very engaging historical dramedy about the deeply ingrained systemic grip the white south had on African American women as their maids as late as the 1960’s while presenting a relatively creative way to combat this with their collective experiences and grievances being the perfect batch for an anonymous NY best seller book. The main cast is very solid, with special shoutouts to Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer. The sh*t pie gag reveal was hilarious, though my favorite joke was the lawn toilet sale typo bit. The movie has a good amount of drama to balance out the tone and acknowledge the severity of the subject matter without exploiting it, minus the unfortunate white savior/focus on good white characters so white audiences don’t feel too bad about racism” aspect of the movie. That being said, I’d argue that this movie certainly handles it better than other similar offenders like Crash, The Blind Side, or Driving Miss Daisy. The ending felt fittingly bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful and liberating. The movie was colorful and well-shot with a fine soundtrack. It’s a slightly dated, but very solid movie and I’m glad it helped launch so many careers for so many of its stars.
