Critics Consensus

As strange as it is thrillingly ambitious, The Lobster is definitely an acquired taste -- but for viewers with the fortitude to crack through Yorgos Lanthimos' offbeat sensibilities, it should prove a savory cinematic treat.

Jordan Hoffman Esquire Magazine Like all good satire, it takes what's already obvious about the world around us and just transforms it into something new. Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Danny Leigh Financial Times Part of the joy of Lanthimos's film is seeing in it any degree of subtext you like. Rated: 5/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com This is the type of film I'm going to watch multiple times, obsessing over every choice Lanthimos and his talented team of cinematic craftsmen made in order to see it come to life. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film The Lobster is an uncanny and bizarre cinematic experience, and, if this is Lanthimos’s starting point, he may prove to be one of the most original directors of the twenty-first century. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film He isn’t a director for everyone, but I love his style of filmmaking. The Lobster especially is one of the most unique films I’ve seen in a decade. The premise is not only bizarre, but it features some wonderful irony about the absurdity of relationships. Aug 8, 2024 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine Lanthimos' particular style, characterized by intense camera movements and exquisite shot compositions, is reminiscent of the best Kubrick. Elizabeth O I believe this movie is suppose to be hated. Let me explain. This realisator who is doted of a fabulously dark intelligence and a talented eye is moking everyone showing us the future of society and the ridicul of how so many of you are in empty relashionship. Whitout you knowing. He is laughting at your nose and that is probably the only humoristic view of the movie. Because most of you wouldnt mind killing your partner to survive or just because , select your partner because of some platonic similarities ,some of you will choose someone because you are a people pleaser, because you are scared to end up alone, because you hate yourself,or because you think this is what society is wanting from you. This movie is the best of the worst Satire ive ever seen.As one of the previous comment said the story is "claustrophobic" you are scotched to your screen watching the beauty of the paysages ,the cruaulty the emptyness, and the sadness of it with so many questions all allong the scenes until the feeling of depression of it buried you inside the death of empathy , real enotions , the sociapatic coldness of the caracters and the truth of it. If you have a kind heart, love deep connexions, if you would love the world to erase all the pain and bitness of it and are looking for real love, friendship and prefer the sun to the darness of this world ,if you are "normal" you should hate it. All the positive and only positives critics are either written by snobs who are exacly some how the reflexion of the caracteres empty whitout fellings dead from the soul trying to please a intellectual analyse or either some random people trying to follow the mass approbation of this movie whitout understanding what it is truly about which is also very funny as "THE LOBSTER" is exacly about you. An empty shell playing musical chairs against the clock of death. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Landon J A little too deep in terms of nuanced symbolism for me to fully understand with interpretation. I think what's ironic, is that it's commentary is about how relationships are scrutinized, yet doesn't attempt to explain, or show an example of alternatives. I was left wondering why more wasn't done with the premise, or why no characters aim to break conventions. Fell a bit flat for me, especially at the conclusion. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review MySaranda S One of my favorite movies, a true masterpiece. It's a strange and meaningful movie with hidden metaphorical meaning, representing what happens in the society ,the different behaviors and roles in love and society rules and stereotypes. It's about choises in love and a question if there's True love and about the willingness to sacrifice for that Love. In the final scene i even didn't get it at first. Watching the girl on the table i assumed he would come back, after he went to the bathroom to blind himself so they would be equal for the sace of Love. But the movie ends with her waiting....Great Plot and cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Felipe N Decent film, it’s good for analysis Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/28/25 Full Review David F This mix of science fiction and romantic comedy with a truly oddball tone offers some thought provoking ideas about relationships and the compulsion to be in them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Alex C Director is so addicted to p*rn it's actually sad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
