The Lost Leonardo Reviews
I was tempted to give this one star to reflect the stupidity of anyone paying millions for a painting where there is even some doubt as to it's attribution to DiVinci. Ultimately, the docco doesn't judge that stupidity but brilliantly shows the build up of faith from a wide variety of places to create a record value without any of the obvious questions being answered.
A very well made movie about the most expensive artwork in the World. I 100% agree with Jerry Saltz position.
Didn’t know what to expect. Really enjoyed! Scary and disturbing. Must see if you’re a horror movie enthusiast.
This documentary is a remarkably engaging detective story into the greedy, self-aggrandizing world of elite art collecting. The film focuses on smarmy, greedy characters embraced by the art world because, hey - EVERYBODY benefits when a lost DaVinci surfaces… No matter how improbable… No matter how unprovable… The Holy Grail of renaissance artwork happens to show up at auction in, of all places, New Orleans. It's purchased for a measly $1200 and ultimately becomes the most valuable piece of artwork ever purchased in the entire world, in spite of it's questionable provenance. The film is well-researched and well-presented with honest opinions expressed on all sides. It's left up to the viewer to decide whether or not the Salvator Mundi is indeed the work of the world's most famous and accomplished painter. A must see for all art, collectors, and historians and movie fans who just love a good, old-fashion detective story.
This is a fascinating documentary about the art world, art museums, art galleries, art dealers, art history, and the way they intersect with big money.
Truth is stranger than fiction. The underbelly of the art world is a fascinating study in the creation of perceived value. If you ever buy fine art, you must see this docudrama.
Really enjoyed this. Very well-researched insight into the dark undertones of the Art dealer world and a credible account of what looks like the biggest money-washing exercise ever. Taking sides here: I love Leonardo's handful of paintings we are aware of - this ghastly painting is most definitely not one of them for me. Still hidden away..Abu Dhabi ? Who knows......Great fun to watch
A thrilling look into the mysterious world of art buying. Had to watch it twice in a row to really digest all of the juicy information they divulged. Highly recommended!
While 'The Lost Leonardo' is still in the very least misplaced, the story of the painting is riveting in the very least. Who knew there was so much corruption in the art world? As the layers of the onion are revealed, the tale gets more bizarre. It doesn't matter if you're into the art scene or not, it's too crazy to believe. A very well constructed documentary that never really resolves in multiple directions. And that's ok. Final Score: 8/10
Great documentary about 2 unrelated worlds...Art and Art Collecting. Well made and fascinating.
If you love art, want a look behind the scenes of the art market and some of the murky players in it, THIS is a must see. I found it very informative, interesting and entertaining!
Timeless themes of deception, greed and vanity are illuminated with the mysterious appearance and auctioning of da Vinci's legendary Salvator Mundi ("Savior of the World"). Intriguing 'behind the curtain' story of the art world, sketches interesting statement on how society ultimately misunderstands and misuses pure creation.
Excellent documentary.
Presents the hidden art purchasing world. Most sympathetic figure is the restorer. Documentary puts together disparate parts in understandable way.
This movie is a detailed and thoughtful portrayal of the greed and politics behind the art world. Honestly, I don't have much thought about art in general. I wouldn't know one artist from another. But the fascinating story behind a painting that is more restoration than real made me think about whether all art is just a smokescreen. I don't believe it is a Leonardo mostly because I don't believe the people involved are honest.
Interesting story but it was a snooze fest.
Very entertaining. ^_~
Interesting how politics and governments screw up art !
Should be on Netflix or hulu.
Interesting film about the inner workings of the art world. Nothing is what it seems to be as far as this art piece is concerned.
