The Monuments Men Reviews
Really really boring. Telling a story that doesn’t need to be told. After an hour and a bit of it going nowhere I decided I didn’t want to waist any more time on it so I turned it off
A 2-hour ad for the US, with a timeline that doesn’t even make sense: the bombardment of Monte Cassino occurred long after the events depicted, completely undermining the plot. The romance is painfully unnecessary and poorly executed. It’s obvious Clooney was aiming for an Oscar by cramming the film with clichés, but the result is a movie with no real message. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
Not terrible, Just boring. The cast couldn't save it.
A great cast and an amazing true story combine to make a horrendous film. This is one of many proofs that the path to hell is paved with good intentions. Read a book about the events and skip the film.
Such an immediately boring and flat film from such an accomplished classically bent creative team and a potentially rich premise. But something is off, the writing, the pacing, the editing, the visual style and the directing are all woefully sub par. Maybe this is a bastardised version of a much longer much slower film but as it is it’s too plain and unexciting to feel relevant and not artistically connected to great heist/chase/war films from the past feel inspired by great cinema of the past.
These people take movies too seriously. Touch grass. With a cast like this it was bound to have comedy and to make light of a dark time while still telling the story. Good watch
A sombre, meaningful subject in the hands of such a talented cast should really deliver something special. Unfortunately, those behind the camera figured that would be enough to carry the movie. The script is weak, and any display of emotion is thinly veiled. Overall, it makes for a great Sunday afternoon movie
Don't let the stellar cast convince you this anything in anything less than average……a potentially good story made mediocre at best.
It's very entertaining and undemanding. The plot is a bit silly: George Clooney saving major works of Western Civilisation from the Nazis and then, by minutes, from the Soviets. But culture and war is a serious subject. Film has a cast of very famous faces.
There's a historical mistake (27:06). On the map you see The Netherlands with Flevoland on it. That didn't exist yet in WWII.
Interesting movie with good range of set pieces. Could benefit from more character development and a story which is more coherent. But then again it was directed by an actor, George Clooney, and he did a fair job
Compelling story, but told in too cheesey/campy manner.
Kind of like Danny Ocean in Ocean's 11. Clooney, Damon, Murry, Goodman supported by others playing their usual movie characters but modified to match the plot. Blanchette as usual stood out as the one truly skilled actor giving her character gravitas in her relatively limited roll. Driving around a German Kubelwagen, stepping on a mine, the team deciding to all stay and risk death from a mine with it turning out to be a dud. The smug German assuming a non Jewish American officer would be happy he was the head of a death camp giving Clooney his opportunity to define what America had been fight for with his response. The last minute save just before the Russians over run their location and grab the art treasures. They really worked hard inventing drama for something that never happened in the way it was portrayed. In all the vastness of all the fronts the idea that one small, hastily put together team of art experts could home in on some of the biggest finds in the entire war in a relatively short time was ridiculous. Maybe if you're an aficionado of art this will hit a chord. As a student of history, considering the millions that died in WWII and injured, those displaced, cities destroyed, a special team of experts finding art not exactly something that in context really can get the juices flowing.
I cannot believe that I have waited so long to watch this movie!! It is really good and educational.
I'm surprised about the reviews. The reason they choose comedy actors is cause it's a comedy. Well you say war is not comedy, tell that to the millions who watched M*A*S*H for 10 years. That's what's going on here a light hearted look at some unsung heros of WWII. Enjoy it for what it is. It's worth the watch.
Good film, not sure what the negative reviewers were expecting from a movie about art experts retrieving rare artworks taken by the Nazis. It's not high drama or a shoot 'em up. The cast played the roles probably close to how real life art experts would behave. So if that concept seems boring, this movie based on historical events might not be appealing.
Terribly bad movie as almost anything from Clooney. Which is worst he puts Damon, Blanchet and other brilliant actors in ghe difficult position or having to accept being part of the cast but He is such a nice guy… Almost an insult to French, Netherlands, Briits. Incredible how to make trash of such a promising topic! Soundtrack reminded me of Willie Wonka and chocolate factory. Ah and that US flag at the entrance of the mine when russians arrived !!!' WTF were you thinking Clooney ?
Better than the bad reviews.
I've never seen a movie with so many incredible actors be so incredibly boring. I couldn't even finish it.
