The Night Reviews
Working better as a drama with very few scares, The Night is a bad horror film but a solid thriller that's worth a watch for great acting and some beautifully composed shots.
Overall, the movie was excellent in portraying thriller, drama, and mystery themes. However, it did not meet my expectations in terms of horror.
There is something fishy about all of the professional reviews of this movie. They all basically say the movie is technically great even though it is illogical and meaningless, and has a weak narrative to boot. I would need three more pairs of hands and feet to count up all of the movies off the top of my head that are more visual, clever and entertaining than this one, and all of them have lower ratings (go figure). The technical achievements of this film are strictly adequate, the standard techniques of the genre. This movie raises vague issues and then drops them just as quickly. (The desk clerk rattles off all of the high profile atrocities he's seen and then disappears from the story. Why? Why is there a "magical negro" mumbling his way through each act? Why does a policeman show up with a doppelganger, ask to hold a baby, and then vanish?) The ultimate revelations are not shocking and not even all that interesting. I thought I might have missed something, but after reading all of the positive reviews, they convinced me that there was nothing there to miss. An empty, mundane masterpiece of some sort. Oh well...
This is one of those films full of nuances that, in general, does not satisfy the taste of those who are more hasty or those who understand cinema only as banal entertainment. The nuances of this film make us think, raising our level of abstraction in an effort to understand ourselves, our fears, anxieties, afflictions and secrets, which at certain moments torment us so much. The construction of the film shows this drama. Trapped in a parallel world, they would only leave when they faced their own demons. This is what suggests what appears to be a Jinn (a figure from Islamic mythology) who questions them at the hotel entrance. Furthermore, the consequences of ignoring what ails us can lead us into a spiral of self-deception that, in the end, will keep us trapped in this parallel world, that is, ourselves. Forever.
A couple is trapped inside a haunted hotel. "The Night" is a sophisticated examination of the couple's inner demons. Nothing is what it seems. Check out from this hotel room if you can!
This was a solid movie very good. The secrets the married couple hide from each other causes problems. This movie caught me of guard and made me jump LoL. Awesome movie
This was a very good movie. A very creepy movie if you will. A couple stays at this hotel for the night and all these things go wrong cause the couple is hiding a major secret from each other. This movie actually made me jump and I never jump anymore. All the couple has to do is be honest with each other for the nightmare to end. This was a fantastic movie
The only redeeming quality of this movie was its use of suspense however in the end it fell flat. I seriously question the motives of the writers and producers. If you actually sit through the end of the film- you will understand my suspicions! A total waste of a Saturday night!
I didn't care for this. I got the point, sure, but there was never a point at which I felt uneasy or spooked or tensed. I felt like the underlying theme was a good one, but the execution did not serve the theme well. Also, there was one scene where the acting was so lacking. The cop-- his acting was so bad that it made the other actors' performances go down in quality. It could have worked in the hands of a better writer/director.
It has a good sense of atmosphere and chills, but overall the movie is rather on the boring side more than anything. It's a shame, as I love exploring horror films from various genres, especially middle eastern and south Asian horrors (which seem to be have been on a good rise lately). The psychological parts aren't very well executed and come off bland, and any of the scares come across as "better" jump scares. I will, however, give it credit for that ending. Easily the creepiest scene in the whole film, and probably the most unsettling scene too.
Psychologically haunting and cleverly playing with perception and tension in a well directed horror movie of a long endless strange night of weird events. A little slow to start and a bit of repetitiveness are the main downpoint but the actors are good and helped by the setting and a visually controlled cinematography.
The Night is a predictable but mostly effective horror film. The acting is all around decent. I liked the production design of the hotel, and the atmosphere was also pretty well done. The scares aren’t anything original but are directed effectively by Kourosh Ahari. I liked the imagery and how recurring images occur throughout the film. I liked the final shot of the film, but the final act as a whole fell flat for me. It played out very predictably. Still, for the most part this kept me engaged. Overall, I thought this was a fine horror movie. It knows what it is and mostly succeeds in it. This is a low 3/5, but that’s mostly because of the final act. If you are a horror fan I recommend checking this out. Ahari has potential as a director, and I’m interested to see what he does next.
If you consider yourself a Horror fan, there is no excuse to not checking this film out the first chance you get.
The one night could be ordinary or a living nightmare for an entire family. IFC pictures and director Kourosh Ahari present a haunted-house psychological horror pic. After leaving a party with family an Iranian husband, wife, and their baby decide to stay in a hotel in Los Angeles. It's called Hotel Normandie but nothing is what it seems. Both of them start to see hallucinations of their demons; this place acts like quicksand. The more you struggle the deeper you get in. They start seeing things from black cats to a homeless man to a small boy. Is the hotel manager even real? They'll both have to try to admit their darkest secrets to make it out. There's all kinds of clever tricks of the mind here it almost has that Stanley Kubrick feel. I give them credit for plenty of uneasy nightmarish visuals. The ending is a tad confusing though. But the true scares come not just from the frights coming at these two people but the actual horrors they've kept locked away inside. A decent first time directorial effort with a real sense of dread and effective atmospherics.
Atmospheric, Stylish Psychological Horror
Stunning cinematography, chilling suspense, and a beautiful glimpse into Iranian culture. Was on the edge of my seat the entire time! It is such a shame it did not get any Golden Globe nominations, even if just as a political move. We need more foreign films like this highlighting overlooked communities particularly devoid in Hollywood. Much watch!!!!
The acting in this movie. My god.
I am a big fan of psychological thrillers and this hit all the nerves. I was not crazy about the very end, but I definitely recommend a watch!
No creepy monsters, no psycho killer on the loose and, no gory death scenes and, yet The Night seems to find a way to be one of the most unsettling horror films I've seen in a long time.
