The Ornithologist Reviews
Even if elements of The Ornithologist are a bit baffling, it's still a visual treat and it's certainly never boring.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 3, 2017
The steel-stomached will find there's fun to be had with the film's investment in the spectacle of bodies (variously gory or sexy), and Fernando's increasingly surreal misadventures, which dance violently between the sacred and the profane.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 8, 2017
Audacious, intriguing and also strangely sweet.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 5, 2017
The Ornithologist is highly diverting and seductive, a pastoral of sorts, and a secular meditation on faith and acceptance, very loosely derived from the life of St Anthony of Padua.

Call it an exercise in staring at a screen for two hours that couldn't have ended soon enough.

If nothing else, will have the adventurous viewer considering a nature trip to Portugal.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 6, 2017
It's a film about the universal desire for greater understanding (of ourselves, and the world around us) that itself is, in a sense, incomprehensible. Intrepid moviegoers would be wise to fall under its spell.

If nothing else, the film reminds one of how strange and beautiful existence can be.

"The Ornithologist" is both an opaque narrative and a deeply inviting one.

The Ornithologist is not stuck in the muddy waters of dissolution or morbidity. Rather, the director has these various episodes function both as chances in which Fernando's desire and agency are tested, and jokes about those tests.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Jun 23, 2017
There's always something to ponder with this film, which gets stranger and more polarizing as it goes along.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jun 23, 2017
Won't be seen by anyone who it might shock and won't surprise anybody who's spent more than a few days around a trendy film festival sidebar.

Mr. Rodrigues ultimately delivers an intriguing, daring film that is likely to surprise both his fans and moviegoers unfamiliar with his work.

[A] dynamic, oddly joyful movie.

This gorgeously realized feature, shot entirely outdoors, explores the agony and ecstasy of a birdwatcher called Fernando, whose encounters after an accident in a nature reserve start to echo elements of the life of Anthony of Padua.

Poas and Rodrigues rework Saint Anthony's expedition with a bold concept that seeks to express the essence of an experience, rather than its physical reality.
| Jun 19, 2017
A delightfully meandering, playfully queer riff on the St. Anthony of Padua legend that uses the classic man-in-a-forest motif on a journey of self-discovery.

The Ornithologist doesn't solve all its mysteries, but it does make peace with them.
| Original Score: A- | Jun 19, 2017
The Ornithologist, is no less attuned to the shock and awe of corporeal experience, but here the fixation is couched in an almost overpowering serenity.
