What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ambitious to a fault, The Place Beyond the Pines finds writer/director Derek Cianfrance reaching for -- and often grasping -- thorny themes of family, fatherhood, and fate.

Gayle Sequeira Little White Lies The film points out how tough it can be to escape from cycles of violence, how misguided attempts to speed ahead only set someone on the road to ruin, and how the compulsion to ride like the wind is inextricable from the fear that you’re getting nowhere. Jul 29, 2023 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Its themes are familiar - guilt; redemption; manliness; those fraternal sins - but Cianfrance's artistry and the actors' riveting performances hook you in, and may even bring depth. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Its narrative riskiness and emotional avidity don't always make for the smoothest viewing experience. But Cianfrance seems less interested in a tidy chronicle than in exploring some threads, in creating a feeling and seeing where it goes. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Christopher Lloyd The Film Yap An uneven, evocative drama that generated strong opinions a decade ago but then disappeared from the public consciousness is deserving of another look. Rated: 4/5 May 15, 2023 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ Despite Ryan Gosling's prominence on the poster and other associated promotional materials, this lo-fi twisting, turning drama actually features more of another Hollywood heart-throb – Bradley Cooper. Rated: 4/5 Mar 9, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Cianfrance never allows his viewers to escape the heartbreak of his film, consuming us with a resounding feeling of sorrow over these characters and the way their lives set paths for one another. P M It felt like they tried to cram too much into this movie, but it was powerful and enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review SkyRo P The 2012 film "The Place Beyond the Pines," featuring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, is a remarkable cinematic experience. One aspect of the direction that I found particularly impressive was how the film masterfully weaves together two distinct narratives. It begins by focusing on one storyline, which eventually transitions into another, creating a seamless connection between the two. The conclusion of the film revolves around the second story, leaving lingering memories of the first, showcasing exceptional writing. Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper deliver outstanding performances, especially in their limited interactions, while also effectively developing their separate arcs. This dual approach adds a unique and powerful dimension to the film. Eva Mendes also shines in her role, contributing significantly to the film's impact. However, I found the performance of one of the child actors, AJ, somewhat jarring; his accent felt incongruent with his character and his father's background. Despite this minor flaw, "The Place Beyond the Pines" is an exceptional film that I highly recommend watching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review Rob A A really, really good Top 10 Hidden Gem that I can't recommend enough. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Lara H This movie is underrated I wish they didn't killed Luke off in the first half of the movie i wish he was in the second and third because this movie was so damn underrated it doesn't get credited Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Rich S If no one is ever exalted as a hero, then no one will ever again have to spend the rest of their days living a lie. That's the lesson I got out of the Ryan Gosling/Bradley Cooper film that pits character against character and actor against actor. If you want to just skip the rest, I'll just print it right here: Gosling wins both rounds. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Fabrícia F Um drama sobre consequências do passado que condenam o presente de pessoas aleatórias e mostra que nem sempre é possível escapar do ciclo de violência que marca o destino de alguém.
