The Rewrite Reviews

Feb 26, 2025

Hugh Grant is absolutely hilarious in The Rewrite, delivering his signature charm and wit with impeccable timing. His character’s journey is both entertaining and heartfelt, making every scene a delight to watch. The film strikes a perfect balance between comedy and sincerity, with pure and genuine emotions shining through. The supporting cast adds warmth and depth, making the story even more engaging. A well-crafted, feel-good movie that is both clever and touching—definitely worth watching!

I liked the movie. It reminds me of the kind of film that was made in the past that were more character driven rather than based on AI generated action. That's also the first lesson in class of Hugh Grant as a failing screenwriter turned college professor. He's found a teaching gig much more out of necessity than love of teaching. The supporting cast is excellent and while the film isn't deeply thoughtful or packed with stunning cinematography, blockbuster action or an unforgettable musical score, the appealing cast and characters make it enjoyable entertainment.

I'll admit my bias - I'm from the area where the movie is set. However, it has a great cast, and an enjoyable story.

A rom-com without much romance and that's only mildly funny? A script about a washed up writer trying to teach writing, that's fairly ropey? It was watchable, partly because of the excellent cast and partly because .. I dunno .. the location? Maybe it reminded me of better films .. so I didn't totally hate it. It wasn't that bad .. but it wasn't that good. I'm sure I'm not the first to quip, but The Rewrite … needs a rewrite.

I enjoyed this - its a bit cheesy but it isn't as 'lovely dovey' as some of Hugh Grants other films which are also categorised as romantic comedies. The plot is interesting and the variety of characters I found interesting - its a relatively quick and easy watch. I thought the story was quite nice and I'm very much for the idea of Hollywood types breaking free of the superficiality of that industry and going elsewhere to do different, new things, such as teach screenwriting, as is the case in this film. I liked the characterisation and aspects of the plot - I'm not sure if there's anything I can say really but overall yes, I'd recommend this film.

fast forward is great, no depth to it, love looking at Marisa and students

It's charming and light. The small out of town college aspect of it will probably resonate with most people. The comedy is a subtle type of funny at times, and the actual romance side to the story is lacking a bit for a romcom but the general story line is nice to follow and the cast are good throughout.

The only reason I kept watching this was for all the actors that I love from many other shows and movies which are actually enjoyable. Forget this one exists and just spend your time watching the actors other work. The whole story is trite, not romantic in any way, was no real tension especially since there was no reason to care about the main character at any point in the movie. This type of story has been done way better in a dozen other movies. In 5-6 years since it released it did not age well, I just hope they've realized in 2021 not to make these movies anymore.

not your typical hugh grant film -- just about watchable - bit drab

I don't understand why this is rated so low. It's a charming movie. Hugh grant doing hugh grant with some very dry funny lines. Totally charming!

The Rewrite is a light romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant as a Hollywood screen writer who hasn't sold a script in years. He accepts a teaching position at a small eastern college to make ends meet and possibly get his career on track. The supporting cast is filled with talented veteran actors playing the part of faculty. Talented newcomers fill the student roles. All cast members are very capable comedic actors. The script is well written and the story moves along quickly. Although the same formulaic plot has been utilized in dozens of movies over the years (at least 3 or 4 times by Grant himself), this film comes though as fresh, lively, mildly amusing, and provides quality light entertainment. If you don't want to watch anything heavy or serious, this film is a safe bet.

The Upper State isn't so boring and rainy.

This movie was a great surprise . Basically a big shot movie writer is down on his luck and saw his career dry up to the point no one will take his writing anymore . So he takes a job as a professor, originally showing up think he was too good for the job and in the end basically refunding himself to start his second wind of life . The comedy hit . The acting was believable. Marissa tomei was great in her supporting role . I’d definitely recommend this movie 3.7

I enjoyed this romantic comedy as it had a good cast and the story was entertaining despite the poor reviews. Marisa Tomei really made it work.

You could watch this movie or literally 1 million better ones. Your move.

The movie is lost between a bad criticism and a failed comedy that is full of common places and jokes that do not cause grace, only those who mess with the metalanguage

Tepid, mediocre rom-com that is fairly predictable. Hugh Grant does his schtick as the stammering, polite Englishman like in all the movies before. Marisa Tomei plays the same sweet romantic female. Nothing memorable, quickly forgettable. What is with Hollywood these days? Where have you gone, Mr. Spielberg? And don't get me started with the critics. Nowadays, if the critics love it, you can count on the movie being formulaic P.C. crap. The same drivel. The one memorable gem in the movie is where Grant's character says he is tired of all the movies featuring a kick ass female, which offends a Jane Austin loving feminist teacher with clout. The irony is that his statement, while meant to be offensive, is actually true about Hollywood today.

Hugh Grant stars as Keith Michaels, a long ago academy award winner for his screenplay, who, rejected in Hollywood, takes up a job teaching screenwriting at a College on the other side of the country but even further away from his usual life. And Grant is good in the more mature, less bumbling leading man role. The supporting cast is solid too, with Alison Janney as a stern Jane Austen scholar and Marisa Tomei as a an earnest adult student who brings about the film's themes of second chances and self-acceptance.

Could only get through half of it. It was poorly written, had no pacing, and I have to think that the writer was going through a divorce at the time, given the way women were portrayed. It was a great cast, but Marisa Tomei deserves better, so does Allison Janney and really, every woman that appeared on that screen. Seriously, when one of the two boys (and yes, I use that term derogatively) in the screenwriting class pens a script that is a Star Wars knock-off and gets recommended for production, well...was all of this meant to be irony? Because if we know you're making a comedy and we're laughing going in, maybe that would have explained so much...
