Critics Consensus

It doesn't lack for ambition, but The Secret Life of Walter Mitty fails to back up its grand designs with enough substance to anchor the spectacle.

Jason Bailey Flavorwire With such high aims, it's too bad that 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty' falls somewhat short of greatness. But it's not often that you come across a "big" movie as earnest and patently un-cynical as this one. Jun 19, 2016 Full Review Dana Stevens Slate Stiller's attempt to braid together introspection and humor kept me engaged and curious, even when I wasn't quite sure what he was setting out to do. Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times The Secret Life of Walter Mitty probably succeeds on its own terms. Given the elusive nature of those terms, it is, however, hard to tell for certain. Rated: 3/5 Jan 1, 2014 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine While not genial, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty recaptures the charm of hopeful stories by giving a comedy twist... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 7/10 Dec 11, 2023 Full Review Wael Khairy The Cairo Scene I admire the film’s originality, and the thought-provoking twist ending, but daydream of a deeper director’s cut. Sep 23, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Less about Walter Mitty’s secret life than his actual, perfectly romantic, impossibly realized adventures, the film loses itself in a fantasy world all its own and never fully embraces the everyday balance of reality and imagination. Charlie R Feel good movie of the last 25 years This film took me back! The cast are fantastic and Ben Stiller is amazing as always. A wonderful gem with an inspiring story about going out your comfort zone and taking a leap of faith in life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Susie C Very sweet and life-affirming Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Chris M One of the best movies of the last 25 years! It requires some depth and soul searching to understand the meaning of this movie, but it doesn't require a lot of brain power to do so. Ben Stiller's directing is phenomenal. His character really carries the show, but he adds additional characters that really set this movie apart. A movie about perseverance, stretching yourself, moving out of your comfort zone and really finding yourself. A MUST watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Ann B The first thing that I love about this movie is how all the evil men are instantly recognizable because they have their hair done. Blow dried, gelled, sprayed, created into a perfect helmet at $500 a pop. Ben Stiller still gets his done at the local barber shop when he has time. Then the fantasies are a blast and the scenes from Life- and Look-era journalism are, for me at least, heart wrenching. In a course I taught on the 60s, I had students read an article from Life on the Kennedy assassination, and they were so impressed by the tone: serious, sober, not looking to vilify or titillating anyone. Can you also do that with pictures? Yes. The movie is for anyone who loves American history in the 60s, and a terrific story, and dramatic vlreal8zations of someone dreaming the impossible dream. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/26/25 Full Review Kayso K The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. A journey. And for me, it hit deep. It's the kind of movie that doesn't just entertain you-it wakes something up inside you and for me this movie did. The camera work is breathtaking, amazing, beautiful and the script uses simple words to tell a good story. It captures the beauty in everyday life and the courage it takes to step outside your comfort zone. I saw myself in Walter. His quiet struggles, that feeling of being "late" in life, the hesitation to try new things because of fear or shame-yeah, that's me right now. But this movie didn't make me feel stuck-it made me feel alive. The landscapes of Iceland and Greenland are absolutely stunning. That scene where Walter skates through Iceland-wow. I've never even been on a skateboard, but now I have to try. In Iceland, no less. I want to sip tea and eat donuts in that tiny Greenland bar where he escaped in a helicopter. I want to ride on that boat. I want to see the Himalayas. This film reminded me that the world is still out there-wild, beautiful, waiting. The soundtracks may not be Hans Zimmer-level epic, but it sticks with you. It grows in your heart. Just like the movie itself. I loved every second of it. This isn't a one-time watch. This is a film I'll come back to whenever I need to remember that life is still out there, waiting for me to live it.
